Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

People are fed up

I've noticed productivity has gone down significantly lately. It's like people are not even trying anymore, mostly just doing what they have to and that's it. Nobody goes above and beyond anymore - and I sure as hell can't blame them.

Did Oracle really think that constant stressing and threats of layoffs would not affect productivity in any way?

I believe the real reason why so many are stuck here is because, even if we clear 5-6 rounds of interview, the moment we describe our age-old products and work on them, nobody will hire us. Unless we lie through our teeth, that we worked on cutting edge tech, no way out of here..

"Cause why disturb this perpetual 'woe is me' narrative?"

Because it's the truth and some of us are stuck here with no reasonable way out unless we move and relocate our families. Yes, it's my choice to stay but that doesn't invalidate the reality of how bad this place is. I'm looking every day and will run like h**ll with the first job offer I can get but in the meantime, give me a break and let me vent.

productivity and motivation went out the window at Oracle many years ago.

So everyone complaining about no rises or bonuses and yet no one leaving voluntarily, something does not add up here.

The problem is that they created a bunch of process layers over the years and a bunch of guys who can never get a job as a software engineer is running those. They create work for real engineers for their survival which has no business values and take the TK or SM card when questioned. So many good engineers left because of these id--ts, unfortunately these guys still call the shots.

O can benefit a lot from paying a consulting company bunch of monies, identity these leaches and have engineering run by real engineers.

I am trying to figure out the new world order and make a place in it. I'm not moving to Seattle though. I am disheartened by the inequality I'm seeing being created by market pressure in the west coast, Seattle mostly and OCI mostly. I understand we need to pay for resources to build a cloud. I question whether hiring people to build a copy of what is being built at other leaders in Seattle is the right approach. Since when did building a copy and trying to catch up with leaders become a sound and innovative business strategy. But I'm no expert. I'm tires of no raises and no stock and no appreciation for the hard extremely hard work that my team and I do in an area that brings in actual revenue and gets customers using Oracle software. Both onprem and cloud. The current confusion is weighing on people. No one knows what's going on. People they've worked with are leaving and there no indication of what comes next. Finding your way is difficult because people don't want to work with others. Trust is gone. There is a lot I believe in. Oracle is not disappearing. There is probably not fraud on cloud numbers, just games with reporting methods like every other company. The 3 CEOs are not out to destroy the company by extracting their riches and then bailing out. Oracle has a long life ahead of it. However, there is a leadership problem. I suggest spending time reading LinkedIn because you will get an entirely different and positive perspective. The truth lies somewhere between here and there. We see it day to day with rumors and no communication of changes and no communication of much really. We see it with no increases and no stock and no bonuses. We see it with an obsession with metrics and process. That's a reality that exists beyond these anonymous forums. This is not new. When you see the development group for the onprem and even the cloud product you work with being almost completely wiped out but then hear absolutely nothing from any leadership, all that is left is rumor and fear to fill the vacuum. It's probably best to stay away from places like this and just focus on positive things and enjoy your work and accept that your salary is what is. Sticking your head in the sand is probably good for reducing stress. Plus, you never see them coming for you.

When I was at the Oracle workplace (laid off from library/storage group working in a hardware lab in 2017) I typically worked 30h week. It was a good situation. I asked to be laid off in my performance plan, and management obliged. If you're near retirement age, ask for a layoff - you get severance, COBRA, and can take the last year working on your golf game.

if you are not getting increases or bonuses for years ... that in itself is a sign for you to move on. Oracle is giving you a gentle pat on the buttocks to giddyup.

but why are you still there?

No bonus or hikes for years drain anyone. O policy is best, to make the employee so much offbeat, that won't feel trapped [sorry will be too late]. Win for Oracle in all situations. Who knows what it discovered first, absence of cost v/s aspirations.

Big Red (O) is a company that by design demoralizes individual contributors so that they continue to work without any pay raise for years and lawyers enjoy hard work done by engineers and sales reps. Remember, it was not setup for engineers or ICs to earn decent wages but egoists to live a leisure life. Everybody ( barring few exceptions ) loses here or feels cheated after few years. Those who realize sooner and join different company are better off than those who continue to work. So, get a new job, help others who are trapped and spread the word to make the world a better place.

It's mostly due to the lack of raises, bonuses, etc. Why bust your butt when there is no reward vs just doing the minimum? Basic human nature that our "leaders" don't get or even care about.
