Been hearing from people who are having trouble getting new employment after being laid off by AIG, and it has me worried. Is it truly that hard to find a job in our industry right now?
I wasn't worried about being laid off before, but now that's changed thanks to this info...
AIG Rif'd me at age 55 right in the middle of global financial crisis. It took me 8 years to find a job in my field not flipping burgers or working in retail. The economy is so good right now no one cares about an 8 year gap in employment. I just tell them it's Age Discrimination like the waiver I was asked to sign to receive my severance and 4 weeks from AIG. If you dislike AIG as much as I do, get off your butt and update your resume then start looking. Complaining about it here won't make your wok week any better. AIG is giving their employees a break from the Rif's. You are 1 or 2 hurricanes or wildfires away from a resumption of what they do best. Getting rid of hardworking employees.
Not a problem. A fair discussion and opposing perspectives. It’s a tough company to work in right now and ageism is a concern for many folks. I bet we have more in common than these post project. I am the poster who said you need to educate yourself on what is out there and have a plan B. I’m also one of the numerous posters who cited 55 / 60 as a difficult age to find a job. You can espouse all the truths you want and dimenish the challenges a 55 to 60 year old faces that’s your progitive on this site. It’s also my pogative to support those who are illustrating the difficulties of age prejustice in the work place. For someone to post that the average is a year to find a job that dimenishes a persons challege !! And no factual basis for shouting that out as if it’s a fact! No one knows what type of pay cut the older person has taken to be employed! A year to get a job for a 63 year old may wreck them financially - so please stop with the self righteous fact statements.
To add to my previous post below, if you are waiting for a package, that tells me you aren't even looking for a job, so how do YOU know companies are not hiring older people????
I have to agree, it takes some time to land a job. If you are getting to the interview stage and not landing a job, maybe you should brush up of YOUR interviewing skills, maybe it's how you present yourself as to why you are not getting jobs. If you aren't getting interviews at all, then hire a professional to help you with wording on your resume. There is ALWAYS a solution to every problem. And, NO, I am not corporate, I left AIG at 60 and found another job, so please stop assuming as to who I am and telling people it's hard to get a job over 55 when that is YOUR solution to end a problem YOU don't have but want to create.

Just because AIG is being jerks about it and let go all their talent at older ages doesn't mean that good companies won't value you and hire you and 7 months is not a long time most folks in the job market take about a year unfortunately it's just the way of the world right now
You bet it’s hard after 55 esp 60!! No disputing it!! The goof in the other post that tried to spin it must be a corporate implant. Esp using BD as an e ample!! OMG what a joke!! Nonetheless everyone should be educating themselves on what is available - and choose to stick it out for the package or go to greener pastures. You won’t know until you try.

I have to disagree with the poster who said it's harder to find a job in their 60's. It seems the trend is hiring older folks because of the work ethic and knowledge they have. Having a degree and right out of college, gives a company nothing new really. But, experience in the field, can help any company grow with that knowledge. Look at BD, he was 70 when they hired him. To the original poster, have faith in yourself and your abilities. Everything is hard in life until you decide to take the first step.
It is hard to find a job when you are 60-62. Companies are looking for younger workers. I was laid off from there got the severance and unemployment. I applied for over a hundred jobs. Had a few interviews but was not chosen for the job. I had a professional position at Aig and was rifd. I will be applying for social security since can’t find a job in my area at 62.
I was laid off in Aug 2018. I took a few months off for a much needed break and was fortunate to land a great job by Dec 2018. I agree with the poster who said don’t be afraid to leave. I had no idea how bad it was for me mentally and physically until I was no longer there. Stay positive, keep your resume up to date and start networking!
Totally agree I'm 63 I took advantage of the resume writer that they provide you after they kick you out they did a nice job I'm getting a lot of phone calls from many industries that I'm applying to. don't worry don't stay somewhere out of fear it's like staying with an abuser just because you're afraid of the unknown not good not healthy. It's not too big to fail it's too broke to fix sinking ship it's too far gone too long to turn around if at all do you want to wait that long
It’s a job and it can not be over emphases enough - have a plan B. Regardless if it’s easy or hard it’s gping to be harder if you’re not prepared. Get your resume updated and start looking at what is put there. Head down and awareness up! Don’t fear it it’s just a job - remember that.
