Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

So, how long before BN can't make payroll?

"What $$ would Barnes and Noble pay Costco rent with? I am surprised when a paycheck clears every week. They will be paying employees win Barnsie Dollars before long."

Indeed. Way back, when I was in college, I worked in a sub-franchised fast-food place. The manager's paychecks and crew paychecks apparently came from different accounts. The managers started cashing their paychecks out of the bank deposits at the end of the week, because they were worried about the checks bouncing. Not too surprisingly, there was a lot of turnover in management.

So, how long before BN can't make payroll? Because that's the end of the line. How long are those still there going to wait?

Good post. I was just wondering the same thing as @Y1rXin7-5jwe

Again, why are formers spending so much time & negative energy on a company they resent, when they are no longer on the payrol

Hope you are all out of work soon. Then we will see how you feel.

Everyone who works there knows the company is in the midst of a retail death spiral, because we are still there and we are doing the best we can.

A bunch of former employees posting obvious things we already know, repeating ominous warnings and even spouting gossip & false information, is not helpful.

Again, why are formers spending so much time & negative energy on a company they resent, when they are no longer on the payroll?

It's not good for your health & sanity, move on.

“It's over a year, why are you still posting on a forum related to a company you no longer have a relationship with, unless you get off on wallowing in residual anger.

Move the f--- on, already.“

You, Madam or Sir,obviously have never been wronged. I’m happy for you. Some of those fired had 10-15, maybe 20 years in the company. This was their career. You obviously haven’t put as many years into the company as they did. Your lack of compassion and empathy goes perfectly with the current company policy. Many of the thousands have moved on. And I’m sure many haven’t . It’s a greiving process.again, I’m happy for you, you’ve obviously never greived. Try to put yourself in their mistreated shoes, for once, instead of berated them.

All these "doom & gloomers" with their endless warnings and fabricated "March meetings," are bordering on pathetic at this point.

You all have supposedly gone on to blissful new jobs that adore you, yet you can't move on.”

You’re right.

You don’t deserve people to post what’s going on.

Keep your head in the sand & someday you’ll move on so quickly when they screw you over.

BN deserves to go down in flames and YOU WITH IT !

Well, here's the deal, pal; a lot of us are trying to speak truth about what's happening to those who are still there--many of whom are our friends, people we've worked with, loved and respected for many years--in some cases, literally decades. When I worked there, I was always amazed how many people who had left came back again. They did this because they loved the company, they loved bookselling, and they loved books. It's not like normal retail. Bookselling is more than a trade, it's a calling.

Alas, the company is no longer the BN it was for so many years. It's turned into a writhing beast, in its death throes, and its tail is swinging wide, and a lot of innocent people are in the way. If I can come here and post my thoughts, and get one more bookseller to realize that they have to s--- it up and move along, then my time isn't wasted.

So I'll move along when I'm damned good and ready.

Dude was correct, there was never a March Meeting. I asked my manager, and he had no idea.

We clock in & out, because we need to pay rent & it's better than sitting on your butt and whining about a job you lost over a year ago.

Can’t wait until YOU are on your butt whining. You and those who have no feeling for those fired, deserve to have it happen to you.

And it will !

“Someone said a while back having a great ASM and receiving manager is the key to smooth ops. I agree, but those days are over and gone.”

My fired Rec Mgr IMMEDIATELY was hired by another company. THEY understood the importance of what he did and how valuable he would be. Good to know there’s GOOD , SAVVY companies out there. THEY will be around long after BN is a dead memory.

They either fired or drove out anyone who cared about sales. Do you think those young kids care about selling? They won't put in the work the full-time people did and why should they, it's just a temporary job.

Those membership card threats won't work on them either.

I agree the DMs are a huge waste of money!! All they do is throw the SMs under the bus.

I like how they find ways to get rid of the ASMs too when they make too much money. It's so obvious.

Word of mouth is the best advertising. It does however cut both ways and bad news and comments shared about poor shopping experiences travel faster that positive ones. There are very little positive ones. I know there are more than a few regular faces I haven't seen in my store in a long time. Why come in if the atmosphere is an undertone of panic and dread among employees? It's not a pleasant experience for anyone anymore. It is such a simple business, books come in one door and hopefully sometimes go out the other door. The company does not manage inventory well and it has zero leadership. If anyone can think back to morning meeting topics from 5 years ago and compare them to now it is clear that accountants are running the company. They have a great term, "negative growth". So the accountant solution is to try to squeeze every dime out of operations. This never takes best practices or store operations into consideration.

What value do district managers add? I can't remember the last good idea to come from one. Setting the store to map could be confirmed by camera. Someone said a while back having a great ASM and receiving manager is the key to smooth ops. I agree, but those days are over and gone.

Expect more law suits and cost cutting measures. Part time employees will never get 20 hour avg going forward. Full time non managers ... how can they keep them and pay $43m in dividends to stockholders?

BN is just an expensive poorly alphabetized warehouse now. There is no turning it around. They can make smaller stores, bigger stores, online, or any of the other "omnichannel" b.s. they might want to spin.

Bottom line there is zero leadership and the talent to turn things around at the store level. Those people have long long moved on.

You say you clock in and out to “pay the rent”. What is YOUR solution when you’re told they’re closing and there’s no check the following week?!

If you still live with mommy or your spouse/ domestic partner makes enough to support you, I guess we know that’s your solution.

If not ,anyone worried about “paying the rent” would proactive and get another job.

If all the “finger wagging” hasn’t made you comprehend the real situation, keep living in your fantasy world. You’re obviously very complacent and comfy there.

Hey pal, I guess your reading comprehension isn't all that. Here's the solution everyone is posting that you can't seem to grasp...GET A NEW JOB! But yeah, go ahead and clock in and out everyday at BN until it goes bankrupt since job security doesn't seem to be your thing.

Every single person who punches the clock REALIZES we are on borrowed time, so please stop with the finger wagging & "i warned you" spiel.

I agree with previous poster. Only an id--t would realize they’re on borrowed time and do nothing.

But if you know.

And, if you do nothing to find another job.

You DESERVE what you get.

Only a fool would know , yet do nothing!

I don’t know about you, but I’m working on my solution. My friends and family no longer buy anything from Barnes and Noble. My solution? If enough people stop buying there they will close up.

Didn’t “ lose my job a year ago”

I found a BETTER job after I saw what an A -hole company I worked for after they fired those booksellers. Not “sitting on my butt, whining”.

Stick to talking about what YOU know. Sure you won’t have much to say.

I'm still waiting for someone to post their sales numbers. I can tell you ours is tanking badly and we're a big store.

Corporate must be really in a panic.

Not as many posts lately. The SMs have convinced booksellers this site is “fake news”. So the sheep are going about their day like nothing is wrong and BN is the company of old. So, when the bottom falls out and you all act like surprised. Those of us who know ,will not pity you. Will not sympathize with you. Will not cry with you. Will not feel sorry for you. You’ve been warned, you’ve seen what’s happened to others and you just clock in and out like it’s nothing. Do something now or shut up later.
