Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Media Contact: Layoffs in Atlanta

I'm a reporter with Atlanta Inno and the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Does anyone have information regarding the number of layoffs happening in Atlanta?

"For those that think the "ADEA" report provides answers, go ahead and post the information about Atlanta (it doesn't exist in the report)." - The ADEA report is company-wide, not just Atlanta, but the company-wide picture is probably representative of what happened in Atlanta.

And don't forget that AT&T has to report the numbers to the state labor departments, so you can get numbers from them.

@mhogan - T's using new tricks. Move jobs to hip and urban areas, kind of like places where people with kids do not want to work. There are multiple messages about it on this board, some are in this thread below. That's the easier way to unload 40+ folks without being accused of #agediscrimination - T is not the only company that's doing it tho... The move works like a charm.

"This is a valid question...." No one is saying that the reporter doesn't have a valid question or story line; the issue is that AT&T will not answer the question regarding details about the lay-offs in Atlanta.

Go ahead and contact AT&T executives in Atlanta and Dallas and see what they say.

For those that think the "ADEA" report provides answers, go ahead and post the information about Atlanta (it doesn't exist in the report).

"If you’re tapped you will receive a copy of the AEDA report."

Yeah, the meaningless gibberish that a court just threw out. See earlier post.

You should do a story about how when they bought DIRECTV they promised and even put in the buyout contract they wouldn't change any of the employees benefits are pay for so long and then did it nearly immediately. Even better would be how they force their employees to meet certain metrics that often time requires lying, cheating, and being deceptive to customers in order to meet those metrics. This is encouraged by managers. They are shady as shady can be.

it's not age discrimination. It's salary discrimination, which by virtue of age and tenure, are higher. And you're right. It stinks. They need to get rid of some high salaries execs instead.

AT&T’s trick for getting rid of older employees is to claim that they want employees to work in Collaboration zones. These zones are conveniently located in large cities where more millennials are located. I along with five of my peers that were let go today are well over 50 years old. All of us were told that the only reason we are being let go is due to our work locations. Sorry, I’m not buying it. Sure smells like age discrimination to me.

This is a valid question. AT&T put on that big show for the Atlanta employees a few months ago- claiming their commitment to being the SECOND largest employer in metro Atlanta. The Mayor was there and the whole thing was emc’d by Atlanta celeb Monica Pearson. So the Atlanta media absolutely should call AT&T out on this.

Furthermore, this will not be counted in the official “layoff” numbers, but several Atlanta employees were told they need to move from Atlanta to LA- which is not economically feasible. So it really amounts to a “backdoor layoff”

All of this, just a few months after T Put on that spectacle at Mercedes-Benz stadium decrying what a good corporate citizen they are and how they are such a champion of the Atlanta community...

This is relevant. I hope the Atlanta media runs with this story

All Surplussed employees get an ADEA report. They have to acknowledge that they have read it.

In fact, AT&T just lost on a motion for summary judgement in an age discrimination suit, related to a prior lay-off, because it provided gibberish, instead of meaningful data, regarding who was selected to be laid-off.

"AT&T doesn't disclose the lay-off numbers or lay-offs by city or state locations, internally or externally." - Wrong. They generate an ADEA report, which lists the work group, position, age, how many under consideration, and how many selected for surplus."

You would have to be very high in the food chain to see such a report--good luck getting that info!

Yeah well beyond the current layoff they're forcing people to move from ATL to LA. Choice is relo or severance. Guess what most take? Guess that's not technically a layoff tho. At least in their world.
