Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

I’m not saying they’re not centralizing functions/roles that don’t make sense. Of course they are. It’s a publicly traded company with an obligation to its shareholders to operate in the most efficient manner. And yes, that may mean they only need 3 employees for work that once took 4 (efficiency gain), but someone is going to do the work of those 3, in a centralized location. I’m also sure some non-customer facing roles have been outsourced/offshored, but for the jobs that remain, the work needs to get done, which means replacing people.

This country has unprecedented levels of low unemployment......almost full employment. To stay in a job your miserable in doesn’t make sense.

This thread is absolutely hilarious! Sad part is the retired individual didn’t retire from the same Allstate we work for. I am still here sitting in misery and hating my job only because I can’t find anything else! They treat us like trash and are steadily lying about us centralizing! The Nevada office is closing in a few months and you bet your bottom dollar Ut and Ok are both next. I’m sick of the lies about Chandler, Irving, and Charlotte are expanding but it’s not claims. Well if this is the case.....WTF are these damn jobs?!? Thousands of new positions in 3 locations??? Allstate has went to hell in a hand basket and no one cares.

Do you really believe a company like Allstate could/would “lay off older employees and replace them with younger, newer employees “ ???? I’ve been involved in more than a couple re-organizations and job reductions over the years, and you have no idea how many checks and balances there are to ensure no group (particularly a protected class, meaning any employee over 40 !!!) was “adversely impacted”. There are multiple reviews of the assessment methodology, and countless reviews of impacted groups. Do you really think they’d risk a class action litigation ???

Yes, some functions are centralized, and no, those impacted employees are not always offered opportunities in roles they have no knowledge of or experience in. That’s called business. I’ve also seen circumstances where we did allow impacted employees to take on a different role, IF THEY FIT IN THE SALARY BAND for the role. They’re not going to pay someone $80k to perform a $40k job.

You don’t have a clue how these things work. Too bad it took you 7 years to leave a job you were miserable in. I’m sure it was reflected in your work product and to our customers.

I can confirm that Allstate as recently as 2012 still engaged in the practice of laying off older employees to replace them with younger new hires. I was one of the new hires replacing people being laid off at the beginning of 2012 in an MCO. They billed it as a "job centralization" and the department was moving to a new state. Yet at the same time they hired approximately a dozen new LDU employees rather than reassign the old employees who's jobs had relocated. It was extremely awkward in the transition which overlapped by a few weeks to have to sit with them to learn about total loss claims, all the while knowing we were taking their jobs, (albeit in a "different department".)

After 7 years of dealing with the lies I left last year. I couldn't stomach reducing peoples medical bills to 2x medicare rates with no basis for it. It was a clever way to engage in pure unadulterated collateral source without having to admit it.

I have enjoyed every second of not being there since my departure. Now I hear that more centralization is going on into "hubs" and that the Las Vegas MCO has been closed and the OK MCO is soon to follow. (I'll admit that is only hearsay at this point and I have not verified that first hand, which is actually why I found this page.... trying to verify it.)

Yes, you’re quoting a 1995 article on a training that went for 4 years and ended in 1993 (26 years ago !!!!) which company publicly acknowledged was a mistake, which is why they terminated the vendor.

Let’s see, since most of the senior leaders in the company have been retired FOR DECADES and we’ve had multiple CEO’s in the interim, by all means, educate your former co-workers on something that occurred over a quarter century ago, as a reason to not work there.

If you think lay off’s or office closings can come close to impacting the stock price, or move the needle on ou bottom line, you’re more naive than I thought, and don’t understand the numbers that influence our stock price.

As far as “targeting California “, absolutely, it was the right decision to vacate the state. Yes there were several large adverse class action news, and yes, the litigious environment was a big part of the decision. The only insurance companies still handling claims there are the domiciled carriers.

You have no idea what current work culture is like with opaque Market Relativity Ratings, freezes, rollbacks, and layoffs/relocations daily. The current C-level exec are hatchet men beancounters who have stock options and with each closing announcement their eyes light up looking at their puts and calls. People do not feel valued or appreciated as Allstate employees, but I admire my peers who continue to work hard above and beyond with no positive incentives or feedback to do so vs just phoning it in to collect a paycheck. My peergroup is more professional than the leadership now at Allstate.

Cant target groups? Wow they sure got rid of all of CA after their lawsuit where the employees prevailed re: workload for employees and the FLSA attempt to circumvent overtime. Im glad your retired cause your are clearly naive, a company yes man, or just plain dumb.

I’m a retired leader who was involved in multiple headcount reductions. If you believe the company “targets” highly paid, tenured employees, you’re mistaken and probably naive. There are multiple layers of lawyers and HR people who scrub the impacted employee profiles, including a thorough “impact analysis “, that looks for impacted employees in potentially “protected “ classes, which includes older employees. From a Claim Dept. perspective, it’s a highly tenured group of employees in certain roles, and it’s going to be skewed towards tenured employees. (unless the impacted groups are Express or entry level claim handlers, which is rare).

Technology advances, artificial intelligence and real estate consolidation all lead to efficiency gains, and the need for fewer people. It s---s if it’s you, and they may regret some decisions, but they don’t and can’t target employee groups, even if a misguided leadership group wanted to.
