Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Failure to manage, taekn out on the employee

I was left swinging in my department. I had offshore colleagues who were rigid in their ownership of their specific jobs, unable to adapt, and wouldn't include me, wouldn't ask for help even if they needed it.

My manager was logged in from morning till after midnight, she wasn't that good at her job and made up for it by working harder, not smarter. So many times I asked if i could help out, "no, no. I've got it."

So I was left on my own to find things to add value. I positioned myself as the go-to SME for user support on the apps we used, how to submit forms, etc. Waited for the offshore crew to get out of my way at noon so I could start being responsible for stuff. Recently we were re-orged and the new manager seemed really on the ball, and I was thinking, finally I'll be used to my potential.

Sadly no. marked BE and let go. I had so much more to contribute than what was asked of me, hard not to be p-ss-d.

The irony of this post is that BNYM is very specifically taking steps to identify the lowest performers and remove them from the ranks by asking the people most well positioned to judged. It's just when the axe came for management adjudged bottom tenth, he was found wanting. From the sounds of it, maybe the position should have never existed in the first place.

Market is shifting... Over last six months I've had friends Goldman, UBS, State Street and Deutsche Bank go through layoffs. There is a big structural shift going on, I think. I may be wrong too as this may be a part of an ongoing process to cut expenses and labor costs - so, this is something that can last long, long, long time... Just venting....

A lot of decisions were based on Chennai's ratings of "Jims"

Well then they are id--ts. I had great relationships with everyone I worked with, including all the L4 managers of the groups we supported. And FYI, not the first time I’ve had issues with offshore not sharing the work with or training onshore people.

It's a little sad that it's taking someone on an Internet board well into adulthood to tell you, but if you're being treated like this, it's because the group feels like you're a waste of time

I can totally relate. My story nearly identical, yet I haven't gotten the pink slip yet. HR supposedly here this coming week.
