Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Cloud isn't' "unprofitable" at least on paper

Cloud isnt' "unprofitable" at least on paper because they're calling onprem revenue + cloud revenue -the total revenue. They stopped splitting out cloud only revenue last year and report a combined number. Can't imagine they'd walk away from cloud now since they pushed everyone to it and went on record as challenging AWS and the other top vendors. I predict they still keep cloud as the main product line but prop it up with the last annuities coming in from the onprem support. All customers are desperate to leave and many already have, but most are locked into non-cancellable contracts for support they can't leave mid-term.

It must be my turn to take this one.

On a word: Extortion. OK extortion is an ugly word, how about Blackmail in the form of those famous (Or infamous) oracle audits. They audit you, tell you that you owe $4M in licensing, BUT they will "allow" you to pay $3M, providing you purchase a in instance in their cloud. Saving you one million dollars, you agree, knowing full well you will never use this pile of undercooked spaghetti.

That's how.

It's surprising that so many customers agree to the cloud b@#$@, even allowing Oracle to provision an environment that is almost as badly supported as the on premise. Support across the board is minimal, expensive and run by untrained people. Why would you risk your data to these kiddo's who have no experience and pay exorbitant support fees?

If you look at the financials of real cloud companies, you will see that they are not nearly as profitable as oracle cloud - SC is on record as stating that oracle’s cloud margins are 80%. The reason is that these real cloud companies make very significant investments in cloud infrastructure, standing up data centers, software development and customer acquisition. Oracle makes minimal cloud investments and calls on-prem revenues cloud. So, no costs and mis-attributes revenues gives you 80% margins. We call it cloud fraud.

Of course cloud is ‘ profitable’ when you randomly ship revenues from on-prem to cloud and don’t deliver any cloud and therefore do ‘t Incur any expenses. Fraud is always very profitable, you don’t have to do the work and earn money the old fashioned way. So, maybe going forward they will just officially shut down the on-prem business, call all revenues cloud and claim victory.
