Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Some of us need a reality check...

Probably not a popular thread but that is ok. No affiliation with CVE management.

As much as you folks want to rag on our new CEO, the board hired him to make the very difficult decisions that Brian never could. He wasn't brought on to be a nice guy and bring back the old country club culture that most of us were accustomed to. He was left with a steaming turd and tasked with turning it into a diamond. It's exactly what Doug Suttles did at Encana when Eresman twiddled his thumbs (did Brian learn it from Randy E?).

Additionally, we work for a CORPORATION not a charity. Even in the very best of times we were just numbers to the company. Cenovus and every other multi-billion dollar company in Calgary are no different than Wal-Mart in their overall objectives. The company doesn't owe us anything and a good many of us need to remember that and stop believing it. Many O&G workers need to get over themselves and realize you are just a numbered rat struggling to get their cheese in the race.

Smart business people hire like minded individuals. Our board is not the smartest - they could have halted the Cop desk and yet here we are. They needed world class experience to run world class assets. And they hired the guy across the street....

There are great articles on LinkedIn about what qualities a great manager has, and what qualities a bad one has. If this is so cut and dried why does Cenovus continually hire the bad ones?? Alpo has had many emails from folks at CL about corrupt managers there and he has done nothing! One guy there hires his buddy's from his home town and screws everyone else over. He is the worst poison for the site and he still has a job.

After all these layoffs I’ve come to see CVE as a source of income nothing more. It owes me nothing more than my pay and I owe it nothing more than to do my job competently. Which I believe i do to the best that I can. The rest I opt out of and that’s the part I have a hard time with, pretending they value employees, want them developed, care about their careers etc. No they don’t and I’m okay with that but let’s just be honest about it that’s all. Alex wasn’t hired to be my buddy and that’s fine, he was hired to fix the company. But just stop the pretending.

You know when people are leaving for lower paying jobs at smaller and mid-size companies this place has issues. I’ve seen a lot of really good people leave voluntarily in recent weeks without a package.

People come to work for more than a pay check. This place is disfunctional and it’s more than just the continual drive-by layoffs.

Yeah.........except the part about AlPo being like Suttles. Suttles is smart, strategic and knows how to get things pointed in the right direction. AlPo should try to be more like Doug

Agree with most of what you say!! I have been a proud Cenvovus employee for years. In my opinion there is a ton more of dead weight to trim within this company. Cut another 600 people, divest, and run with that.. lean! It's crazy how entitled and arrogant some of my fellow co-workers are. Like this poster had said, get over yourselves and count yourself lucky someone is even willing to give you a pay cheque!!! - CP

I think people are saying they want cve to be true to their word, at work. They’re not referencing the decisions as a result of running a business (ie layoffs), rather ‘if you do a culture survey, follow through with the recommendations’ or ‘if you ask for my honest opinion, don’t penalize me for it’ or ‘if competency is really important, choose and keep the people capable aNd competent, not those who are z’s golf and poker buddies’ or ‘if we support healthy conflict, then be ok if someone disagrees with you’ or ‘if diversity and inclusion are important, then ensure you have Capable representation from different cultures, genders and thinkers at the leadership tables through the organization’. It’s very white, male and lemming like group at the CLT and layers below.

Simply put - people are recognizing that CVE (and AlPo) May talk the talk, but there’s a whole layer underneath that doesn’t walk the walk. We are calling BS on the hypocrisy.

Good post and accurate. It is a reminder to everyone here to always have their resume updated (even when times are good) and to constantly network. Don't get too comfortable where you are and always be open to upgrading employers. Very true that we are nothing but a 6 digit number to our employers.

Great post! Contrary to society's propaganda, we are not special. Company owes us nothing. Let's be grateful we have a pay chq.

Happiness is a choice of perspective. When we put down that chip on the shoulder and lose the first world entitlement issues, life at cve becomes a lot better.
