There were 48 people let go on Nov 27th, I suspect there are more to follow, slowly like a leaky faucet, despite any promises to the contrary.

Speaking of the inverted pyramid, there is a director with no direct reports, who is now ‘on leave’, reporting to another director. You can’t make this incompetence up.

I had no idea about these high level promotions before looking on here. It makes me sick that they didn’t use these movements to flatten, but rather fatten.

Unfortunately, mass re-structurings won’t happen because that would be admitting they messed up after the previous half dozen attempts and didn’t finally get it right.

It was quiet on layoff.com for awhile. I would have to say some of these recent decisions have struck a nerve with people. Talk about undoing all the good work tht has been done to restore morale.

Anybody notice how lots of these promos are happening on the down low with little fan fare? Just emails sent to a select few. How ridiculous is that.

I agree with everything said in this thread. It’s extremely disappointing because for the longest time it felt like we were headed in the right direction, and the culture was shifting. I for one was bought in. Recently with all these promotions we are reverting back to old ways and kicking people in the stomach. On one hand you are begging for the Govt to help is out of this mess and on the other you are promoting people. You create a new position for a director in enviro and military; miss a chance to flatten the org in drilling, and create some new management roles in HR. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING.???? ALPO you have successfully created a culture where people are “happy to have a job.”. That is a dangerous place to be. I would much rather have people bought into a culture, moving in the same direction working to help the company and one another achieve success. These recent moves that YOU allowed to happen have left me speechless. I for one don’t care anymore and I was someone who would have done anything for the company. I now am one of the many that are just “happy to have a job.” Congratulations you win.

The last poster nailed it with this company.

There are still far too many managers/ directors/ VP’s with only a couple of direct reports. That isn’t about efficiency or quality management it’s all about empire building.

VPs never want to lose important sounding positions reporting to them. Losing one of those high paid direct reports makes them feel less important than their peers. Is this why management positions are rarely eliminated and even created? ECA/CVE has always been like this, before nobody cared because we were making tons of money no matter what the executive did, everybody was fat and happy. Unqualified people put in high paid positions (not all but many), i's always been like this, possibly the only way to change the culture is to completely clean house of the old guard and that will never happen. A take over would work nicely!

Us down here feels the pressure more and more. Not only more work loaded onto us due to fewer staff but now we get multiple sometimes conflicting directions from all these so called managers and leaders.

This inverted pyramid structure is ridiculous. Soon it will be everyone giving their opinions but no technical and qualified people to do the work.

I think back at how cop operates and I look at cve...it makes sense where the two are. To the new clt, why not try to fix internal issues which are in your control instead of sitting there using hope and asking govt to fix external issues.

Don’t forget about the new director in EHS as well, that’s another new high salary position just created as that group lost people. Lose some people gain new mgmt. that makes sense.

I don’t know what Alex can do to help with the perception that the mgmt looks after themselves first because they keep proving that it seems to be the case. Just like the reduction in bonuses for most employees below mgr. it just keeps piling up. HR is the worst by far with bloated high salaries.

The reason they lay-off and promote at the same time is to keep people that they believe to be high potentials. But don’t ask if these newly promoted people have the qualifications to do the job caus they don’t. AlPo if your reading this and I know you are, this is one of the things that destroys .org health. Why have succession planning if you plan to drop in your favs into roles they would never qualify for and have them “lead” the ones that were in the succession line.../.

Cenovus lays off a bunch of people this week. Fair enough differential is hitting deep need to make cuts, I get that. However, while laying a bunch of people off they go and promote more mgmt. to manage fewer people.

Suncor has one Manager of drilling and completions, which makes sense. But not Cenovus, they just promoted one guy to Director of drilling and another to Director of well completions. So there are two Directors at Cenovus doing the same job as one Manager at Suncor? How does that make any sense to the average guy out here in the field while we are being laid off the mgmt in Calgary gets bigger? I just don’t understand. If I’m missing something please someone point out where I’m going wrong I’m open to being corrected here. Not even being sarcastic seriously help me out! COP never did this.

Clearwater hasn’t sold probably because it’s a c-ap asset just like the rest of Deep Basin. Our old conventional assets were far superior in terms of cash flow.

Big Z was one of main promoters of the Conoco deal yet no fallout on him. Can’t even admit they made a massive mistake.

What do we expect. The Big Z is incompetent, so if he surrounds himself with those who are more incompetent, he looks like a frat boy rockstar. Name. Vp or Director who has any friggin clue about what they are doing, other than kissing z’s a--.

Exactly. What everyone needs to ask is how much success can be had if your head of SCM has no scm experience? And your new director of real estate has no real estate experience? Or how about a vp and a director of EHS who aren’t safety experts or even knowledgeable. Could it be that cve puts people into roles because they do whatever Big Z wants (or engages the business if we are quoting the corporate c-ap).

Why yes, yes it could be. Cve - you continue to create your own chaos and mess and the rest of us pay for it.

The one constant at Cenovus, mgmt looks after mgmt. even as the rest of us get laid off they get promotions. Did CEO even ask if we need a VP of SCM? Why not a mgr or director lvl? Do we need a director of real estate or would a mgr do just as well? Do we need a new director in EHS or is mgr okay? These questions seem too hard for our mgmt but letting go of staff, well that’s a no brainer. Reduce bonuses of line staff but mgr and above keep theirs intact. How many shots at reorganization does the big Z get anyways? Isn’t this his third try or so? And let’s not forget his great brainchild that almost unionized Cenovus. The folks here in the field are getting tired.

Kept it under 50 to avoid government/media notification. G&A will remain flat as much needed promotions will offset reductions. Job well done!

It is a sad state of affairs. This probably just puts us in the stupid position of having another round later on in a few months. These guys cannot get anything right. But don’t worry I heard some groups did more promotions to directors and mgrs while laying people off at same time.

Call me Scrooge, but that’s not nearly enough. That won’t even put a dent in the cost structure we are stewarding toward. Some teams whose work is 100 per cent driven by growth in deep basin never let anyone go. What a joke. Big z as usual all talk and no action.
