Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I gotta ask

Are there really people who expect to receive a bonus from Oracle?

If there are, how deeply your head must be stuck in a sand to think that?

"It has been difficult, to watch strong (Sun) engineering products wither on the sales team"

Try pointing the finger at the market. Linux and x86 captured market share by having a compelling price/performance ratio and offering a path away from the proprietary lock-in solutions that had dominated. It ushered in an era of low cost, horizontally scalable, distributed computing that is now the foundation Cloud computing While Sun, Oracle and EMC were part of the original "four horsemen" of the internet during the dot com boom, the focus on proprietary approaches and vertical scalability has been at odds with what customers want and the business results tell that story. That isn't to say that Sun didn't have good talent or that the engineering wasn't strong -- just that it fit one era of computing and never adapted to the changes.

As of now, server manufacturers are fighting a totally different battle as workloads are moving to the Cloud and the big three Cloud providers, for the most part, have their hardware custom built. While Oracle is trying to sell its own hardware for on-premise and Cloud use, it simply doesn't have anywhere close to the same economies of scale and, therefore, is going to be challenged to compete. So it talks about "engineering" and how the backplane is superior or how the hardware/software are engineered to work together for boosting a proprietary database's performance. While there is some element of truth there and some customers buy-in to it, it is missing the mark overall. What an AWS or Google has engineered operates at a scale that is many times greater than what Oracle has, is more agile, has the open source options customers want and costs much less overall. The battleground has shifted and Oracle/Sun are stuck trying to win with old tools and approaches.

@WI5cIKX-1acd USA salary is higher but cost of living is much higher too. You think Oracle care people leaving for other job because of higher paid? Think twice.

I just got a bonus from Oracle for Christmas and they gave me 6 months pay, too!

The bonus was they told me I had to find a new job.

We just got "defocused". So long. Good luck everyone.

In the past 8 years since Oracle consumated the purchase of Sun, I have had 3 bonuses, 2 raises. It has been difficult, to watch strong engineering products wither on the sales team that Oracle considered “crack” sales team. The double entendres are on purpose.

"I got a bonus. It was actually more than the maximum I'm entitled to."

I'm glad that HR is well taken care of.

In APAC and IDC, annual bonuses and hikes are pretty much expected. Why? It's because salaries are much lower there vs. the USA and all of the competition does the same thing. It's pretty easy to walk down the street in Hyderabad and change jobs if your current employer doesn't keep up.

I received one or two bonuses when my title was "Consultant". That ended quickly, although I stayed in the same department. Too much reorg; my head was spinning with moving around and changing managers. Still did the same work, though, surprise, surprise.
