Oracle is not going to beat AMZN with a bunch of millennials being responsible for selling the database over the phone.

"So is he lying or is he telling the truth? Is amazon's aurora just mySQL? Is he leaving out information?"

He is doing what he always does -- he makes bold statements that cast Oracle in the best possible light, but typically only having a grain of truth to them at best.

Information on the exact internal codebase of Amazon Aurora is elusive. It was designed to be a MySQL compatible database and later added Postgres compatibility. It appears have derived some of its storage approach from open source MySQL code (i.e. it might be a fork of the codebase), but it definitely has a lot of enhancements and design elements to make it a more performant and robust Cloud database. It is considered as a proprietary database that Amazon engineered and one has to give them credit for the outcome even if they may have leveraged some open source code as a starting point.

LE's claim that it is just MySQL is a vast oversimplification at best and is consistent with his approach of claiming that Oracle is the original innovator and, potentially, the owner of intellectual property (e.g. look up the Java lawsuit against Google or how they recently changed the Enterprise Java licensing for Oracle's benefit). Let's not forget that MySQL wasn't even created by Oracle in the first place, but was an acquisition and is open source, so LE's intonations about "our" MySQL database is taking credit for something he didn't even create. LE is doing what he typically does -- spewing half truths in an attempt to get media attention.

What else would you expect him to say? Oh, gee, I screwed up, missed the whole cloud thing and now oracle is irretrievably behind. And oh, by the way, the only thing keeping the share price up is the $12 BILLION we’re spending buying back shares, without that the stock would be on the toilet.

How many people actually work in the DB are at Oracle? How many people does this work actually support?

So is he lying or is he telling the truth?

Is amazon's aurora just mySQL? Is he leaving out information?

None of those exclusive interviews/segments were what would be considered serious or objective journalism.
