Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Get out before the job market gets flooded

I don't understand why so many associates are staying at their jobs so late in the game including at liquidating stores when things are looking so bad for the company.

I got out of Sears after working there for over 20 years and found another full time job where health benefits are equivalent to or better than what I got at Sears....but I am paying less than half of what I was paying for health benefits at Sears.

Alot of associates seem to want to wait it out to the very end or are hoping for some miraculous 9th inning recovery of the company.

What happens when all these associates flood the job market all at the same time competing for jobs?

Meanwhile, those that planned ahead and got out soon enough have already established themselves at new companies.

Good post @W5TmOZe-exs . Think that we all need to be aware of the situation and start looking for jobs instead of hoping for a miracle.

Only benefit of staying on for part timers is in the first 6 weeks. There is alot of overtime up for grabs. In a store close to me in 2015 they paid unlimited overtime for the first 7 weeks. When they closed my store on April this year we were allowed to work only 52 hours. Don't know what they are doing now in the closing stores with ot. Part timers should ride the " overtime wave" then get the he@@ outta dodge!

I get higher skilled people maybe looking forward to some down time with decent unemployment benefits but a part time at minimum wage will get peanuts in unemployment. I would suggest if you are part time move to a better part time employer now paying better and you will be ahead of the game long term. 40 bucks a week unemployment is going to get most people gas money.

I know a part timer at work that believes after the holiday hiring will be for permanent part time work where as right now it’s just seasonal.

Delusional

I get that some folks want unemployment benefits and stay, but look at your states rules and number of weeks you'll get before making that your end game.

My state went from 26 down to 12 weeks.

That's not that much folks.

And all that time, the company continues its death march, making any planning toward pension that much more difficult to obtain if the company goes toes up first .

Its not unusual that employees wait till the end . People want unemployment benefits . It not wrong to want what is there , its something you need to use when you need and deserve it > The problem is , there are going to be so many people in some areas that are now going to be competing for jobs of the same type . Thoughtful people will weigh the unemployment benefits and the find a new and better job fast benefits and pick what is right for them . As for us that got out and did find better jobs before this , we dont see Sears anymore , it's Eddie Lampert lining his pockets .

I will tell you why right now. I have first hand knowledge of why someone would stay because I was one of these associates. I was a long term associate with many years in and they announced us closing in Jan of this year. They closed our doors forever in April, only 7 months ago after 43 years! It was not a shock but it was disappointing. I saw this coming for real as anybody would have if they did due diligence as far back as 2013 I would say. I vowed to stay on until the end, even knowing I was risking getting no severance if they filed Bk before April of this year.

I assumed the risk full well knowing the implications! I rolled the dice and i won you could say. I got multiple weeks of severance due to my years of service and they paid it all. Severance ended in aug. You stay for alot of reasons actually ,some rational and some not so so much. You stay because you have so many years invested, because of the people you work with, the friendships , the gutteral instinct in wanting to see your store "put to bed" so to speak. Where will people end up? What will the store look like. Noticed that a lot of people who stay are longer term associates who did and do care about the place that puts bread on the table. Maybe its a work ethic, loyalty thing. This company had somd amazing workers! It is only natural that you want to see it do well. I did everything in my power to make my store profitable. But as we all know now, it was not about the profits! God speed to all those left. And yes, there will be people who stay on till the end knowing severance is gone. I guess it's just what some people do, kinda like the captain us the last one to go. I was the captain!
