Open Office Concept

How much is it costing to implement the "open office" concept in CLW? Did you even ask the employees if they thought that it would benefit them? Or did somebody in HR think "Hmmm, I'm sure that this concept will attract millenials, even though we have nothing else to offer them. After all, it worked for Google".

Or perhaps it was one of the managers who thinks that she is "in tune" with the employees and knows how to motivate them?

I have heard that the Exec who was pimpin' this has left HNY, so the initiative has now lost momentum.

In Aero there is a pot of funds marked for office modernization. When there is a transition or a site want to consolidate within its self or bring other local sites on that campus, these funds are made available. A pitch is made for why, how much is saved, how many additional seats are made available then it's approved modified or denied. If denied they can still go it they just have to find other recourses. Not sure how large the pot of money is.

Back to the first question, how much is it costing Honeywell to do this, I head upwards of $750K but that sounds ridiculous. If it really cost that much, I can't see how this "workplace modernization" pays itself off. And it is hard for me to imagine the geniuses who keep cutting funding would throw that much money away.

Does anyone have the real figure?

IMO Honeywell does not want permanent U.S. based staff. They would rather everyone in the U.S. act more like consultants or contractors. They provide a work place, but nothing permanent or long term.

So they can tell WS wizards how much like Apple we are becoming.

"Collaboration"??? We're encouraged (and directed) to interface with other colleagues via Skype or email who are supporting the same project from far-flung locales. So why would we need to "collaborate" with colleagues in the same physical office? Pffffttt.

A few folks I know who work in silicon valley say the idea is only about 75% of the work force is in the office at a time thus you don't need floor space, desks, phones to accommodate 100% of the workforce. Don't really need phones either, or desks with drawers/overhead cabinets, or office supplies. Use computer for a phone, all files are digital, bring your own pen and paper (but not really needed in digital world). When you take a few days off you don't leave unused floor space behind, someone else sits where you were. And a lot of contract workers. Much easier when you have a RIF. Yes and managers will say that open concept helps collaboration.

Hmm, open office spaces in CLW? Is this Diggy's plan?

Originally it was done to squeeze in more bodies in smaller sq. ft. They wanted to give back leased space and fit those folks in what area was left. On paper it looked doable due to people out on vacation, travel, WFH & sick but in reality it didn't.

First come, first served, and very noisy.

Just out of curiosity, do people have assigned desks in these open offices or is it an "open range" first come, first served deal?

In the real old days I worked at a facility (not HON) with a giant room organized as a "bullpen". All desks faced the same way. No partitions and barely enough room to squeeze through to your desk. The higher up you were in the pecking order, the further back you were, the better to savor your exalted status. Ah, the old days. S---ed then. id--tic now.

It's being done per corporate directive. Shove more people into buildings and get rid of more buildings. Happening everywhere. Phoenix Sky Harbor and Engines will be like this to accommodate the Tempe refugees. Too bad no one thought about parking spots.
