Thread regarding Molina Healthcare Inc. layoffs

No More Severance

Word is.....Molina is not paying out severance for the RIFs anymore. OR at least, people are being let go and not getting severance. So maybe they aren't coding the terminations as RIFs. If that's the case, people.....be SURE your termination coding doesn't preclude you qualifying for unemployment benefits. Stay aware. Don't presume ANYTHING.

While I agree with the comment that if severance is mentioned in the handbook, it might mean Molina is obligated to pay it...though there are also state regulations that could come into play. The reality is though, I know some people have gotten severance and some haven't. I also know Molina doesn't do things by the book, all the time. So....people should just be aware that they may not get severance.

Check if the Employee handbook has been updated. That’s why those of us who were laid off last year were able to get severance. It was written in the employee handbook and we had signed for it when it was updated.

I'm not sure your Plan President (NM) knows if you will be paid severance of not. Retention bonus and severance aren't the same thing anyway.

Common mistakes I've observed over the last year of Molina goings on.

1) Folks being confused that bad employees were still in their positions as good employees were being let go. The on going layoffs aren't decided by plan OR corporate leadership exclusively or maybe even at all. Consulting firm was hired and algorithm tools used to help reduce costs. None of this lay off business is about who adds value and who doesn't. Some good people lost their jobs. Some not so great people still have their jobs. That will continue.

2) Folks thinking their leadership can assure them some amount of comfort that they will keep their jobs. If your leadership isn't empowered to make lay off decisions, why would you think they have input or even knowledge about lay offs?

3) Folks are myopic when it comes to Molina. Think bigger picture. This isn't about keeping the company afloat. This is about selling.

4) Redemptive stocks being bought back is to pay back bridge loans. HUH!? Molina recently bought back $65 million dollars in redemptive stock. That's A LOT of salaries that could've been paid. The only reason to buy back that stock is to inflate the value of MOH stocks. The reason to do that is to make the company more desirable for take over. This is an age old trick.

5) Folks are still counting on getting severance and say they are sticking around to get their severance pay when they are laid off. We know Molina is no longer paying severance to everyone they are letting go. Of course they aren't. If the end game is to sell Molina, that means everyone must go. That's more severance than Molina can afford to pay.

In NM we were told by our Plan President that he was going to Long Beach to talk to Corporate about the increase for our retention bonus. Is he lying to us?

I think you may be confused. By law, they don’t have to offer you severance unless you signed a contract sayin so- I highly doubt the majority of this population be lauded off (non-Sr Director and up) have this under contract. Also, if they do these RIFs in large numbers- they may be bound by law.

So generally speaking - right now- what’s going on- they don’t have to offer much

One of my friends laid off last week was given severance.

If you are terminated you don’t get severance though. I think other posters are confused or manager’s did not explain clearly .

Can someone explain how employees being laid off wouldn't get unemployment? I can see how Molina is being shady and getting around the severance pay-out, but how can they not qualify us for unemployment benefits?

I know two people who were let go last week who say they are getting severance. Do you think they were bullied into misleading people to think they got severance pay? This is kinda nutty.

Holy crap! WOW. People need to grasp this. NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS!!! Why? People who are still working there keep saying they are staying for the severance. Speak up, people. Help out your fellow former team mates.

CONFIRMED:

Molina has ceased paying severance for all employees laid off for months now. Why this hasn't been discussed before is a wonder.. HR has been directed to answer NO questions concerning RIF terminations and to essentially treat RIF employees like lepers.. no surprise considering that HR has been getting regular directives to minimize any conversations with at-risk departments as indicated by JZ and co since January and to not answer emails that are coming from non-internal email addresses to prevent exposure to non-employees..
