Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Oracle Rapid Culture Changes

The thing to realize is that the culture is going to go very quickly from bad to worse.

As the cloud numbers don't improve, the layoffs will continue. Each group will be working to make sure someone else is laid off, not them. And within each group a pecking order will be established to make sure the manager's lackeys are always left standing.

If you thought there were dirty tricks being played before, it will be a free-for-all in the sabotage, humiliate and attack game.

If you don't want to be one of the attackers and you don't want to be attacked, you need to get out.

If you are 50 and think you will be waiting for retirement at Oracle, I don't think you are going to make it. The company is targeting the older employees. If you are 50 and making a bay area salary, you can be replaced by 4-5 developers in India. You may think you are the only one that knows an area and you are safe, but the management looks at the numbers, not your experience.

Better to update your skills and start looking. At least you will know what is out there before you get your walking papers.

Reducing management and replacing with competent management from other companies is what is needed. I have found that when there are managers with only one or two reports, they are usually between management layers and what they seem to be doing it trying to train the id--ts working below them. So, really in some cases, teams are managed by a manager and what I call a "stem" manager above them, that is trying to train them.

So, it begs the question, how many oracle managers does it take to run a project? Got to be a joke in there somewhere, but the situation is too sad. They should just lay off the managers that can't function, don't assign helper "stem" managers. What a waste.

I’m a customer and just watched a sales team bulldoze a partner so they could try to sell us more cloud. Insane

If Oracle desires to finally make clever organization changes it should decrease the number of lines of business or - even better - align its sales force in markets and industries rather than in products and thus start to think more outside in rather than inside out as seems currently the case. In other words, to move to a customer focused organization. Creating an organization into - for example - 5 markets also would remove duplication of resources and - specifically - decrease the number of managers (far too many currently. If Oracle subsequently decreases the number of management layers (it makes no sense to have managers with only a few direct reports, sometimes only 1 or 2 where something like 10 should be the absolute minimum) and simplifies its processes, then it would be far better able to react to today's markets' challenges. A simplified organization structure also would make Oracle better manageable. Oh yes, and removing some VP layers also significantly contributes in saving costs. I think.

Really good advice. If you think you are too old to get a job elsewhere, it still won't hurt to start looking. You may find something.

I know there are people at Oracle who do nothing and know nothing, but there are also smart people who have just become complacent in their job. Those people are capable of finding a better position in another company. Get started, you may find there is something out there for you.

"The spreadsheet game is sorted by salary."

I saw that at HP too.

It’s not only the 50s. The spreadsheet game is sorted by salary. So if you are at the top of the pecking order by $ then you have a target on your back.
