I think he had was getting kickbacks from the suppliers who BN bought all that back to school merch. Stores look like a mini Staples/office Max. He probably came on and said to Mead/Bic/Pilot "I can get you in 600 more stores if I get a % of the money BN pays you".

They need to get rid of the secret shops. Quit wasting the money and put it back into the stores. You cannot pass a shop if you have no staff and the staff you do have are trying to get the crap done all the while the dms are breathing down their necks. Can't do a job without the resources .

"What do you think happened to the CEO to get him fired?"

He's inept. Always has been, always will be. Worked for him at Staples and the best day at that s-hole was the day that DP left the org. I've been watching B&N ever since he took over and brought you down faster than he brought down staples. "Stupid is as stupid does."

Good luck to you and so sorry you are on the same path as staples.

It’s most certainly not an exaggeration! The DM in our west coast region is a terror. She leads by fear. SM’s are afraid to ask her for help. The store is short on payroll and rather than actually asking her for more hours, the SM’s in the district will work 60+ hours a week. She sends emails every 2 hours asking about conversion, menmbership, and email rates. Our former ASM was due to be put on an IP solely because of the poor shop - she was MOD at the time. She quit the same day and refused to sign it. Before the big layoff, our head cashier was amazing. On the day of the shop he’d sold 15 memberships. The shop named him personally and said he didn’t ask about it. He was put on an IP. 15 sold, yet supposedly missed one and put on an IP!! This is no exaggeration, this is what’s happening in CA stores. Before you accuse someone, maybe take a step back and realize you don’t have it as bad as other stores. I’ve been at BN just over 3 years. I’ve had 2 SM’s and now have a 3rd. I’ve had 5 ASM’s leave, 6 MM’s leave, 2 CM’s leave, 2 CBDMs, and of course the RM in the layoff. The turnover is unbelievable - all because of our DM.

Store autonomy? That's laughable. The stores do know what works in their local areas, however BN's largest issue is inventory. Large, 30,000+ sq ft stores carrying approx 80k titles, while a large majority of sales come from a small percentage of books. Namely, new releases. Add in all the payroll receiving, shelving, zoning, and returning books.

Trying to be the "every book for everyone" model does not work in this current retail climate, when an unnamed 800lb gorilla can deliver titles within 1-2 days. BN's savior is high margin products and an extremely knowledgeable bookseller staff. This allows them to connect with their customers. Customers will always look for the best price, tho, regardless of loyalty.

@TYioOQp-4wfk what store are you working in where all staff is written up after a secret shop? i've been at bn for over a decade and never heard of that. there's no need to exaggerate things, the truth is bad enough.

@TYioOQp-2xlw First and foremost: store autonomy. Each individual store knows what works! Especially on the small, simple things! Quit focusing on the BS membership and emails. Do you know BN pays for the stores to be secret shopped and then if the stores don’t get 80% or better then all employees who were in store get written up if they were in store at the time of the bad shop? How is that motivating?!

Good Evening . I am a business writer for an online business publication and have been following this story closely . I am most interested in knowing all the things that all of you think could really turn the company around. It sounds like the people who work in the stores knows what it will take .

Would like to know what should be done.

The more they try to go forward , the more they go backwards. Does anyone remember when the boxes came in with the books categorized by zones. Well apparently they are going back to that in a matter of speaking . This time they are going to try and put what books go onto what h cart, as if all the stores are set the same. I wonder how much the fool who came up with that idea got paid. Categorizing by zones would work but not by h carts. Another failed attempt to streamline and think they can get rid of more people because it will be more efficient.

How many ceos does this make.........

The first thought that came to my mind was s-xual harassment/assault/abuse. Something along those lines.

I guess we'll never know unless someone leaks the info because Barnes & Noble surely won't tell us.

I think they need to add some labor back to the floor so we can do our jobs. It has been operationally impossible to keep the store shopper friendly with one person running around trying to help everyone and backing up cafe, and cashwrap for breaks, let alone not having anytime to receive product or do any admin work like hire, maintenance and training.

Well since he got no severance, at least he will be able to apply for unemployment straightaway. Right before the holiday too. That was cold.

It was probably for doing the same things he did when he was with staples. S---ing, cutting labor, s---ing more, killing the company stock price.

He should have never been given the opportunity but alas it is retail where you can completely screw something up and think you can do a better job somewhere else

Does anyone believe what B&N says anymore? They lie more than Trump.

They probably wanted to get rid of him in desperation and they'll get another idiot in his place. Wash, repeat. This will go on until after the holidays when there's a huge clearance sale.
