Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Do more, do better

So, the demand from Darius is to do better from engineering? Yet he is business heavy? Sounds pretty bleak.

-4ige You must have a problem with comprehension because it was a very clear answer to the question posed. There is no doubt that the "poor" in the US have substantially better quality of life than they would have had even 30 years ago let alone 500 years ago and that they enjoy luxuries that only royalty had or beyond what they had back in the day. In a historical context the fact that a "poor" person in the US can take a bus or their own car to a grocery store or fast-food joint and get something to eat that likely was sourced from hundreds of miles away & that is reliably safe to consume is amazing. A poor person with a simple illness won't die today in the US whereas a king of old would likely die with the same illness.

Anyone with the ability to think reflectively can see the wonder with how we live today vs how people lived not too long ago. The share of the world living in "absolute poverty" was around 70% in 1900 and is now closer to 10-15% despite a boom in the world population. Why? The rise & spread of western capitalism & values.

The overall point is you can't have it both ways. Progress means change and in this case globalization & technology means we have to find ways to compete with labor outside the US. I'd rather continue to adapt and enjoy the fruit of human progress during my lifetime than live in a country like you envision. The good news is you can probably get a Visa to go live at least temporarily in places like you prefer but good luck finding a decent job (even if you speak the language). The most protectionist countries per globaltradealert.org: Venezuela, Vietnam, Russia, Algeria, China, Kazakhstan.

Finally to OP - It'll be interesting to see how long Honeywell can keep this up. At some point I have to assume the whole deck of cards comes down (ala GE). Certainly better to have an outside view of things than to experience it from the inside.

-4eyn you are so stupid it's not even worth responding. "Air conditioning, cellphones, refrigeration, automobile transportation" for kings and queens of old age? Are you a total idiot?

When were those luxuries invented jackass?

-4mpn. Reality koolaid. It is good you should try some.

Air conditioning, cellphones, refrigeration, automobile transportation, their own bathrooms, etc the list is endless. The evidence is so overwhelming that it is amazing anyone would object to it unless they live in a carefully constructed alternate reality that only exists in their head....

"poorest US citizens today enjoy luxories the kings and queens of old couldn't dream of"

What kind of koolaid have you been on pal?

News flash folks, Honeywell is an international company. Why you think you are entitled to a job rather than someone in a different country willing to do the same job for less is beyond me. Honeywell is owned by the shareholders and operates with a profit motive. The profit motive combined with voluntary cooperation & trade (eg capitalism) is why the poorest US citizens today enjoy luxories the kings and queens of old couldn't dream of.

Globalization of trade (including labor) allows more people to rise up out of abject poverty and in real terms provides greater value per dollar of the products and services that we all enjoy. If the iPhone supply chain was forced to procure everything from the US (including labor) very few could afford them.

(More a response to some prior commentary than OP) The argument that you are worth more than your replacement in India or elsewhere is immaterial. Your employment is at will both ways, you can quit and they can fire you. If they make a bad decision to let you go than they have to deal with the consequences at which point why would you care?

Darriass would love to see big revenue if it just happened. Trying to work to generate more revenue is too hard. What he focuses on is cash. (Mostly cash for his pocket.) For dividends and buybacks. He reports to WS and they demand Cash. Cash levels can go up if sales go up. But quicker if expenses down, or you sell assests. Slashing expenses, reducing heads mainly, selling designs, empty out buildings and sell them, sell divisions, equipment, revenue sharing deals. His time horizon is short. Get as much cash as you can as fast as you can and if things start to look bad, bail.

Hard to do better when DairyAss is too busy polishing off Wall Street bankers singing his ode to high margins.

Self driving cars coming to Phoenix should be a total embarrassment to management in flight controls, they could have invested in this space years ago but Diamond Dave was too busy with his high margins to care.

Darius.....what a joke. This guy is an idiot in every way. I don’t know about all of you but I’m so tired of walking through the hallways and thinking “man, am I in India”. They have screwed us since they took over this company back in the 80’s and it’s not going to get any better until we, the employees, STOP it. I never thought I would hear myself say this but we really need to get a UNION in place. We need to stop the International loss of jobs and we need to stop the deep pockets of these money s---ing CEO’s. All of this needs to get out to the media, the sooner the better before ALL of the jobs are gone to foreign entities. I’m already beginning to fear planes and if they continue to put our real technology in the hands of foreigners I will probably stop flying all together. STOP THE LOSS OF AMERICAN JOBS!!! 🇺🇸

You guys have to remember something. The O-N-L-Y thing Dairyass cares about is revenue and getting richer. Quality, performance, innovation, being an industry leader are all things HON leadershit doesn't care about. #1 goal is to keep the stock price up. #2 goal is to keep the numbers looking good at all costs, usually by removing benefits or reducing headcount. #3 goal is to get stinking rich from goal #1. THATS IT! This is why most of the current HON products are pure garabge; because they don't give a sh--. They know outsourcing causes problems. They know quality suffers. They know it's bad long term for customers. You know why they still do it? Because they're taking in millions of dollars by selling us out. That's why.

I would love to here management give a pep talk on why Engineers in developed markets should work Honeywell say versus Raytheon that pays more and cannot offshore. That would’ve be entertaining. But, that would deal with reality.

You want more from engineering? Give them tools and training. Allow them time to work pet projects, see their families, get some exercise. Offer tangible rewards for their accomplishments instead of just a lesser punishment. Stop cracking the whip and start making investments in a healthy workforce for God's sake...

Engineering works 2 months per quarter, finance shuts the charge codes down the last month of each quarter. Engineering isn't the problem in bringing new products to market.

How can a business man expect more from an engineer? Threaten them that they need to do better.

Didnt engineering have a "good" year though? Instead of saying keep doing more of the same, the answer is step up.
