Severance aka Payment in Lieu DXC after 16 years

Got the notice of WFR in August. For 16 years of service, you get eight weeks of pay that is taxed heavily. They also block unemployment by claiming it is a payment in lieu.

My wife got three months severance after two years at her company. They didn't block her employment. I was passed off to DXC from HPE which transferred me from HP.

Let us not forget the cobra they covered for one month. You have to pay first, and DXC will get it back to you in 3-6 months.

When I left, I had paid my entire years salary by July in billing. So even if you work hard, they will not treat you right.

Even if you are offered a serverence package they cannot deny you unemployment, that is your right and as a tax payer take advantage of it.

Your state unemployment commission is going to ask what you got for severance or payment in lieu no matter what it is called. They will then extrapolate the over the period following your last pay to determine when you are eligible for first unemployment check. The only difference I have seen with prior payouts in the withholding on the taxes for a payment in lieu is that it is taxes a specific amounts whereas the severance pay method was based on your w4. Freaked me out. I'll get it back at tax time.

It's a terrible world, perhaps you should have your wife do your battles for you...
