Thread regarding Chicago Bridge & Iron layoffs

Poor management and no accountability

as other said, CB&I has very poor management. top mgr levels silo their departments on purpose, this is an attempt to avoid blame for ongoing poor project execution. there is a ton of projects that have issues. there is a deep culture of mistrust, back-stabbing galore. Everyone is trying to avoid responsibility for mistakes is a greater priority than taking responsibility for action.

The leadership needs to change the culture of departmental managers - this has to be done quickly. The lack of functional teamwork flows down to the project teams and makes root-causing and solving problems very much harder than it has to.

Process problems need to be solved - no committees - takes forever. make small teams responsible to fix process issues and empower them.

Would you please consider not making the CMS system a barrier to innovation.

The requirement for everyone in a function to do things the same way, unless granted a GFN deviation, makes doing things better exponentially harder. Project teams should have a lot of flexibility to do what looks right in the moment, within what should be more relaxed bounds.

Also, stop with layoffs - there is enough money to overcome problems - focus on the individual and invest for the future.

I can tell you that before CMS, it was a nightmare. CB&I acquired several companies: Howe-Baker, PDM, John Brown, Lummus to name a few. And they brought in a bunch of new hires. Everyone was doing it the way they were taught at other companies and there was no consistency. CMS might have been burdensome to Fabrication Services, and perhaps they should not have been forced to embrace it totally, but it was definitely needed in the CB&I Oil & Gas sector. Don't blame it on CMS. The most likely problem was bad estimating, and that possibly includes mistakes in MTOs, equipment and material pricing, labor efficiency and productivity. There are a lot of good people at CB&I, including their management. Not all.

Sorry, but perhaps your bad decision put many others in danger or could have costed the company much more with LTAs. Can't blame the company when you made the mistake.
