Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's Bloody August Purge!

Aye, it's me again. Still employed at Jolly Old Oracle, but likely not for too much longer. Alack and alas.

Friday is indeed the Big Day (or the first Big Day). It's likely that Microelectronics and other Hardware-centric groups will be hit hardest (50% or more). FLMs, Directors and some VPs in Systems remain totally in the dark (as we drone workers have been), which bolsters the notion that highest-ups made the decision to kill most of 'Sun' a while back, and plan only keep a few stragglers around based on salary and other nonsense.

It'll be horrendous, however you look at it. I don't think any of us remaining in my group wish to stay on after Friday, because it will be all about cleaning up someone else's puke and sh--e as quickly and inexpensively as possible. Blindfolded. Likely naked. And, really, who wants that? I'll take the Package now, please, Sir/Madam.

Friday will be world-wide - most Geographies. Either immediate walk-out-the-door (most of US work sites not impacted by their 'WARN' notice) or a few weeks to find something (Deutschland and some other EU countries).

They'll likely keep a cadre of less-expensive engineers around to do the bare minimum required for support. For awhile. Existing legal agreements? Trifle!!! Throw lawyers and monies at them to make them disappear! End-Of-Life the whole lot, with a generous severance check to our Loyal Customers.

No rumours yet about the fate of Java, beyond that recent article positing that ownership of J2EE is being shopped around outside.

Everyone here has stopped working, emailing, caring. It's a mess. No transparency. No trusting that we in the rank and file are adults and can handle 'Business Realities'. Nowt. Instead, we've a dearth of information, leading to fear, paranoia, self-recrimination, etc., with no direction whatsoever from above. It didn't really need to be this way, though as someone who works for me mentioned earlier this week, "You forget that this is the way bloody Oracle does things."

Yes, but that still doesn't make it right.

Bollocks.

I am going to get a bag and take all the free soda from the break rooms.

soda have sugar and bad for health. so don't spoil your health just bcoz it is free.

Instead take all those tea bags that are good for health!! ( green tea , herbal tea , ... )

I am going to get a bag and take all the free soda from the break rooms. No one will be there to consume it anyways. Why should it all go to waste?

They will be introducing their HR Layoff cloud service using blockchain tech. It should be a real winner with leadership and they can layoff the HR people next. After that perhaps they can get rid of the lawyers.

I think one could repurpose the Roomba vacuum bot to be a manager or a HR drone. Have preset values to get status of directs, to walk around the corridor to see if people are working. Face recognition technology could be used to convey a greeting or say "Well done". Wait. I think I might remembering an old episode of Futurama.

I'm surprised oracle hasn't automated layoffs down to a standard e-mail sent out at midnight. Yeah, I know just gave them a bad idea. That said, these meetings with your manager to get laid off, are a total waste of time for everybody.

Don't be afraid to change. I left Sun and became an architect at Netflix and then did some venture capital work. I am now an architect at AWS. There are plenty of opportunities out there. Step out of your comfort zone.

Some are saying that there will be a prerecorded conference call. That would be kind of shady, but not implausible

I really feel for you guys. Really I do. I worked for Sun from 1999 to 2007. It got too stressful waiting to get RIF'ed so I bailed. A lot of my old peers still work for microelectronics and are in a real panic now.

@pcu - don't worry about it, take the oracle cash and keep quiet about what you're doing

If I get job while on WARN what can be legal implication? How can they find out?

@P1n0HWg-zts

How was your package? I'm curious if it will be as good or big as mine. If they get cheap it could be smaller. I've always been told you want to be the first to receive the package because it usually shrinks over time and gets smaller.

For the poster who wanted the package: make sure that's in your performance plan. If you don't get RIFed this time, you can hope for the next round. Your manager may not be around, so make sure it's in your plan. It worked for me in January, and although I miss Oracle for about 3 minutes at a time, once every other month, I'm having a blast. Look for jobs in FinTech and Blockchain - there's more money being thrown into those areas than you can shake a stick at.

What do you mean by "most of US work sites not impacted by their 'WARN' notice"?

Checked our building in SCA. Conference rooms are mostly free on Friday but almost all which have max capacity of 8 are fully-booked from 9am through 1pm on Thursday. Hadn't seen that before.

These include conference rooms in areas where we don't have any staff assigned to cubicles.

I want the package really bad. Been wanting it for a long time. I really hope my manager gives it to me. I pray for it every morning and night. I am about to march into my manager's office and scream at the top of my lungs, "Just give me the package now! I am sick of waiting for it and can't take it anymore."

What I have heard is that in SCA they are going to bite the Cal-WARN bullet and just do it, otherwise it would take almost a year to dejob the target number. That said, also heard that it will be next week, otherwise they would have to retro WARN those laid off earlier in August.

As to who will get it, HW and SW, though the SW rumors are fuzzy, due to a deliverable promised for next year,

Three conference rooms at my location have been booked all day Friday by the same individual from HR. This is in the U.S. I don't think HR is visiting our location to wish us all a happy Labor Day.

Lots of good information here, but in the US I would think that any layoffs this week would happen before Friday to make the end of the quarter and end of the pay period.

You say Friday because of a leak ? You mentioned everyone is in the dark , so is this a leak or a rumor ?

As far as the 50% cut in hardware. If everyone is in the dark as it is now, I don't think it will be 50% . It will be 90% or more , with few teams to take care of M8 shenanigans.

Again is the 50% a leak or a rumor ?
