Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

Mattel has no incentive to improve

Why would anyone worry about turning the company around? The execs still get their millions whether the company does well or not. They know they have years to s---le before the ax falls. When it does they parachute away with more gold than they can carry.

Might as well chillax, vacation on the company dime at Milan Fashion Week, and leverage your position for seats on Boards of other companies. In a two year period they will make more than you minions make in your lifetime.

What's to worry?

Well said, @OcNqwFn-pvn. They have exactly zero incentive to do something about the current situation. None of them will leave the company hurting, no matter what happens. And who cares about the little guy, anyhow?

Look, you can blame the current Exec team all you want (why wouldn't you?), but the real reason Mattel s---s is because of it's unbalanced portfolio. When fashion dolls make twice as much margin as everything else, you'll do anything to keep that category pumping. When the category no longer means anything to kids, then you abandon your other brands by:

1) raising prices in a vain attempt to make up for decline in fashion dolls

2) become uncompetitive

3) Shift your advertising and marketing over to fashion dolls

4) continue to see a decline in fashion dolls because (wait for it) kids no longer care about them

Until Mattel and the CEO publicly admit to this imbalance and inevitable fail of Barbie, the investment community won't understand just how far off the business really is,. Only admission of the truth will quickly bring the stock to its knees, at which point another PE of IB firm can pick up the pieces and take the company private where it can take the next 10 years to rebuild (yup, it's going to take THAT long).

Sadly, this rings very much true.
