Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Company focus

Hearing that company wanting to get rid of as many employees over age 40 as possible , anyway as wants younger staff hoping to stay current

I know when I worked at AIG there were more than a few people over 50 who were hounded about retiring. They were constantly asked “when are you going to retire” almost on a weekly basis. The ones still there are simply waiting for the ax to fall as they have far to many years in to let the severance pay go.

I was laid off in 2014 😃Along with our entire department. Two were in their early 60's. Five of us were in our 50's, a couple in their 40's and I think 1 was close to 30 or a bit over. I was happy about the layoff because it was a sinking ship. A couple of others chose to relocate.

Everyone in charge has no idea what they are doing. People get hired into a possession that they have no experience in yet they are the ones in higher positions. The few that do know what they are doing are supposed to stay quiet because upper management feel threatened.

If AIG customers knew what is going on in AIG, they would definitely question why they and their families are insured through a third-rate company, one which treats it's own employees like **** and has no concept of business operations. No one should expect anything other than a sharp and steady decline, one that has been furthered by the inflow of very recent and lowly skilled executives they have hired. The dummy list is long, everyone AIG knows who they are, but what can one really do?

The employment agreement is pretty restrictive. Were you offered an enhanced severance package to waive your rights? If yes, what number of weeks?

Interesting. I just got let go and the only other people I know who are also being told to leave (6 in total) are all over 40 (2 x 40; 2 x 50; 2 x 60)

Has anyone laid off in the past few years consulted an attorney? That is, has any outside entity looked into whether statistics indicate widespread age discrimination in reductions in force?

the young and the talented have mostly left so if that's the approach, close shop and go home...

They are hounding anyone 60 and up in our office to retire also. These are workers with years experience. Proves they are still shrinking company

Hard to believe this. How many 20-35 y/os are there at the firm? Seems unlikely.

...because in a fast moving industry like insurance, less (experience) is more.
