Volunteer for Layoff

Has anyone on this board ever volunteered for layoff? If so, can you please explain what your approach was? How did your ex-manager react? Is there an official process provided by HR for such requests?

My previous manager, during the whole MYWORK return to office fiasco, was essentially told take a severance or return to the office, he wanted the severance, but then they dicked him around and put the whole thing on hold....he pressured his manager and HR that he was given the option at the time and he made his choice, eventually he did get severenced and did get the package, but he proceeded in these conversations ever so diplomatically..........another example is my previous manager was very close to retirement and during the course of his 1-1's with his manager, essentially said, if there was ever an opportunity to be severed, think of me first.......following year he got severed, but his boss was cool about it and it was an off the record type conversation.

@erp I don't think there would be any difference in terms of unemployment benefits as the government would not know who initiated it. As far as they are concerned you were let go by your company. That's all.

Post ID: @OIRBl4P. Can't agree with you anymore. I was hoping to get laid off for purpose of severance, however, could not hold out any longer. I found another job and put in 2 weeks. I must say it is very tough to leave on my own after 12 years.

Good question, my guess is if you volunteer to be laid-off you may not be eligible for unemployment.

I attempted to but no dice. Decided to go ahead and retire instead. I think unless layoffs come from higher up, they won't do it to avoid paying severance.
