Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Too many managers managing one or two people

Seriously, how many IT and Finance so-called managers have only 1 or 2 people reporting to them? No other company looks like this. Look at the online org chart for yourself. Those organizations are engineered to create extra supervisor jobs to protect their favorite people.

This is one of the biggest problems at Conoco right now. Way, way too many managers who are that just in name, so they'd get the higher pay and protection. And of course, when layoffs occur, they are not targeted, even if a bunch of them are completely useless.

Can you share the org chart you are looking at where this is true? Oh wait...you cant, since you were fired a while back and don't have access to it.

False news buddy - unless you care to show some proof of where you have come up with this fact.

If you think IT is taking this company down, you're mistaken. Look at the other E&P companies who pay significantly more for IT and get less.

Contractors aren't listed in the org charts so the listings are a bit misleading.

I hope that ECo project team sees how out of balance Finance and IT are in managers to staff. After all, Finance and IT probably make up 1/3 of the whole company.

There have been instances, in recent years, of technical managers having a "group" that in reality had not a single person in the group. In 2 of these examples the groups slowly decreased in size to zero due to attrition, the reason for the departure of the technical folks under the managers being that the managers were abrasive, egotistical, and socially inept. People under them couldn't stand working in their groups for and alongside these protected managers. Managers were protected for far too long, but were eventually cut, I think it was in round 2, as a result of this downturn.

I looked at the org charts today. OP was right. I counted three managers just in one finance group each with only 1 direct report. Thats 3 managers leading 3 staff. Oh wow.

Well now, you must just be one of the 2 people on here who say anything negative about the company. Sarcasm. 😡

spot on. and for any offended management types...this is NOT how an independent E&P is structured. I know the studies have been done...count the number of levels between wellhead & CEO of an actual independent E&P...and then behold the unnecessary bloat that is the COP structure.

so...either stop saying that we're the world's largest independent E&P, or start speaking the truth and say we're the world's smallest non-integrated major, which is how we are currently structured and how we're doing business every day.

but hey, i'm sure it's just an unrelated coincidence that we measure quarterly losses these days in B-illions of dollars.

just sayin'.

choose a path and act accordingly...you can't make a thing become reality by simply mouthing the words and saying the reality is so...
