My auto office has a number of employees who would have gladly taken the severance package and retired. Many jobs nationwide could have been saved. Many families not impacted. Would this have been too much to asks?

No, it was not too much to ask - all decent companies do this and it's a smart thing to do.
Yet, for whatever reason they went trigger happy and started cutting, in many cases, without much thought put into it.
It was a disastrous move.
I got out while the getting was good. Apparently I had a sixth sense I didn't know existed. I was miserable, but I feel for all those who lost their livelihoods.
