Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

2018 Severance and stability questions.

Can you provide input or to any of the following ? (non sarcastic) feedback is appreciated.....

1- What is the average age of folks from Dell and EMC who are being offered Voluntary or involuntary severance packages.

2- What is the new 2018 severance package for age groups over 45, 50, etc.

3- Are severance packages negotiable?

4- Is a PIP really a plan to improve performance or a warning shot that severance is pending?

  1. Are there other signs that severance is pending other than PIP?

  2. Are women and minorities protected or assisted to find new jobs vs offered severance?

  3. Any idea what the 2018 severance package offers? Weeks, months, earning target ratio etc.

the 100k target is taking so long to achieve because it may never be. Management are in dilemma, lay off old timers which cost a fortune or lay off newbies which are mostly the only people that knows how to work and cheaper in the long run. Follow the money. Nobody gives a sh-- about you. Follow the money and politic your way to that corner office being a sycophant.

No one is safe except those that are in the "unethical club".

No one is protected except for those in "The Club". If the rumor is correct that Dell will reduce headcount to 100,000, a bloodbath should happen at mid-year. Since it is easier to dump people in the USA than Europe, most of the cuts will happen on US soil. Get your resume together, take the package if or when it is offered to you and try to find something more human, kind and useful. Dell exists to enrich a few people and the rest of us get crumbs.

Nobody knows who is protected... or not. As a technical woman past 50 yo who's only been with the corp a few years, I feel extremely vulnerable. It would be cheap and easy to get rid of me, since I'm in a position with redundancies across both sides, my counterparts are in RR with more history (and probably lower salaries), and I don't always "play nice". Been around too long to countenance fools, so I speak my mind. We'll see how that works out... ;) But to be honest, the best thing would be getting a package and moving on. The title changes they put in place are a disadvantage. Nobody can see from looking at my new title, what I actually DO. Either the people coming up with these titles have no clue, or it's a ploy to undercut our LinkedIn profiles. Not that I'm suspicious or anything ;)

It's best to hedge all your bets, take nothing for granted, and just focus on doing the best job you can - getting satisfaction from the work itself, and always working towards the next situation that's on the horizon. The last thing any of us needs, is to fry our systems with bitterness and acrimony that taints our attitude when we interview for our next job.

Stay strong.

Take nothing for granted.

Remember that the corp's chief goal is to ensure its own survival, not provide anything of substance for any of us that doesn't suit its own purposes.

I cannot comment on employees over 40 or 50 plus. Here is my observation during last year layoffs. I noticed all female employees have jobs, as Dell and Emc is afraid to lay them off because of previous law suits. In fact women engineers are making fun of Michael as they are untouchables.

Not a well planned cost reduction, losing exceptional employees will hurt businesses.

I am a midget and they laid me off. I was not happy when they said I was only entitled to one half the severance package of my peers.

47 here and been with the company 17 years. 2 weeks notice, 10 weeks pay and a week for each year served plus 75% of bonus and any long term incentives that will vest during your severance period.

I couldn't make anything out of this. EMC executives and management made money from buy out, stocks, RSU's, bonus.

Now they want to rub a little on Dell.

They are getting rid of best talent and keeping average. I feel bad for new release and customers.

I, for one, was not cheering. Still don't. Still won't.

It'll be so ironic, if they keep me around...

I wonder how many of the people like me were cheering, eating cake and celebrating on Twitter when the merger happened to now just get pie in the face while leaving this company

I am 59 and my position was 'eliminated'. However, younger employees with same title were not let go. Since I had 5+ years and over 55, I got a total of 28 weeks severance plus benefits. 52 weeks is the max anyone can get and there is no negotiating. My workload was sent to India and I hope they choke on it.

Previous experience with layoff at EMC: just about all of the people laid off who were not able to find another position or offered another position were 45+... oddly enough, young white males and some females magically got promoted and/or better jobs... oh, and was told by a divisional director they used a stacked ranking to determine who would get the jobs offered which is just a sorry excuse to give whomever they want jobs even though they are not the most competent and productive employees. When you are laid off, you get some skewed layoff notice with the ages of employees laid off and those who were not and it a giant piece of BS and totally irrelevant -- it encompasses every group they can think of to skew/offset the ratios and just another dirty, sleazy layoff tactic they use to get rid of older employees. It's all really criminal but they get away with it; during the time I was laid off they had 100+ in-house attorneys, the majority who did nothing but collude with HR and managers to cover up all of the illegal/questionable/discriminatory behavior that was rampant in the company and no doubt still is, it was the culture and went all the way to the very top. I would be surprised if much has changed because if it did, most of the managers would be gone and clearly, the employees who actually work are the ones still getting the axe, management seems to always take care of each other and why that good ole boys club has been in existence since the DG days and looks like membership to the club is at an all time high these days.

The ones I know of were 45+ and many years with EMC so most likely high in the range. The packages last year had more weeks available over 55 or 20 years in.

Personal experience:

1 - early/mid 40's is what I have experienced (and have seen)

2 - package doesn't change until age 52 and then there are additional weeks added (currently under 52 you can only receive 26 weeks max)

3 - sev packages are not negotiable

4 - women are not protected (woman over 40 here!!); package is generally 10 weeks plus 1 week for every year you worked
