Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

It is a blood bath...

I am seeing my Humana at Home team decimated by recent changes in metrics, audit criteria and other expectations. On my team alone 3 nurses have resigned and 2 were fired for not meeting expectations, several are on written warning to show improve or be terminated.

It is a blood bath, nurses are abandoning the Humana ship as soon as they can line up another job and with the nursing shortage that is pretty easy for most of us. I have talked to friends on other HCM teams and it is the same with them. This seems like a concerted effort to force resignations first, then lay off or fire as many nurses as possible if enough do not leave voluntarily.

Obviously Humana prefers the former as they do not want to pay for unemployment. The metric expectations have gone from 70% contact rate to over 85% which is statistically unheard of and unreasonable since we have no control whether or not a member picks up their phone or if they will be willing to engage with us so we can complete required assessements within deadlines. Most members are complaining of excessive calls from Humana from other departments and demand we keep our calls short or hang up on us. Humana has increased contact expectations to 10 daily, 3 hour call time and aux code (i.e. monitoring what we are doing every minute of the work day) to total compliance or else, no exceptions say for dr appts., computer or phone issues etc. Stress levels and anxiety are off the chart. I heard 2017 open enrollment fell way below predictions and also that Medicare is drastically reducing its reimbursement for our care management of its members, so that combined with blocked merger is driving this staff reduction. I expect it to get worse before some sort of equilibrium is reached

I find it completely distasteful and rude/ignorant of the writer who verbalized losing one's job as trivial. Obviously you are compensated by your parents income or you would feel the desperation that others are feeling in looking for another job. Having children to care for, a home to pay for, food to buy, its not about extravagant vacations or excessive luxuries. We are talking about basics. Being told you are hired and valued and thrown out the door as soon as a whim comes through. Competent workers who put in massive overtime, blood sweat, tears to provide for this company that has no loyalty to ANYONE! employees Or customers. Your day is coming. I pray you are never homeless or hungry.

Right, poster below. How dare anyone who loses their job consider it a big deal? How dare the 2,000 plus who have lost jobs in recent rounds get upset about it?

Don’t they know how unimportant their job loss is? Sure they may have children, elderly family members, others who depend on them - but really, what’s the big deal? Drama queens / kings, the bunch of them.

Lol, blood bath. Really? Yes, being RIF'd s***s big time I know I was RIF'd too, but this is certainly no blood bath. You want to see a real blood bath? Join the military and go fight for your country. That should put things in perspective for you.

I read these posts and I feel so sorry for all of you. I retired late last year. Wasn't planning to do so for about 4 more years but I knew I was going to drop over dead in my freakin office chair if I didn't. My blood pressure this morning was 105 / 70. At work it had been running up to 180 / 100 on extremely stressful days. Please if you can leave that awful place. There is life outside of that work environment that is actually good and full of hope

I’m one of the coaches that was let go. 10 years of service. 10 years of 10 hour days. High performing team throughout. This is about greed. Get rid of those long in the tooth that use benefits, contribute to 401k with matching and have high salaries. H@H is a sinking ship because of poor frontline leadership and the failed merger with Aetna. You can bet that broussard and his cronies at the top got theirs.

The truth is that Humana had assets in those bundled bad mortgages. They lost millions and then covered it up with stock buy backs. Now their rotten chickens have come home to roost. Except, they are blaming the employees for the greed of the boards directors, who deserve jail time for not maintaining the cash reserves to pay the claims and keep the costs down for the beneficiaries.

Why the layoffs reasons

1). Job security for mike frank. He was let go from Travelers when they aquired by Aetna. Now with this merger he has something to prove so not to be let go again.

2). Humana fell below the expected benchmark with STAR ratings.

  • a rating of 4 or 5 is guaranteed incentive bonus from CMS. We were below 4 so no additional Revenue which they had already planned to get. When you plan you spend with expectation anticipated expected revenue will cover the cost.

  • a rating below 4 disqualifies Humana the right to enroll members year round .They are now restricted to enrolling members only during open enrollment. That means all the sales agents and marketing people really do not have much to do.

3). What attracted Aetna to Humana was the amount of members we serve ( which we all know was hyperinflated), STAR rating =guaranteed annual revenue, passing NCQA

When did all of 2 & 3 change? Does anyone know? When expectation changed and leadership changed.

The reason the metrics increased is because you had those who overachieve in calls per day and thats all they needed. If a few of you can make 11 or 12 calls a day then our expectations are too low cause we can justify that your peers are achieving it

Leadership demands you work later if need be to meet expectations and references being salary. Salary does not mean free overtime. Salary was not meant to overlook labor laws. However, we work in at will state so they dont have to have a reason to fire you.

4). When budgets for 2017 was made leadership did not want their salaries affected so they made cuts in FTEs to ensure that their salaries are not affected

This company does no favors to the population is serving and its workers. These poor nurses were brought in to fill in positions that at first were temporary then suddenly extended to months. They went through an extensive audit project working beyond their scheduled hours which also extended to weekends. During and months after the audit they were banned from applying for other jobs. That speaks so much about this place as far the lack of opportunities for their employees for growth and development. And suddenly as the merger deal fell through the pressure in metrics went out of control and shorthly after came the harassment to push employees out the doors, forcing employees to resign and ultimately lay offs. It was very disheartening see co-workers and Coaches go. I guess that's how the corporate world operates, very cold!!!

Coaches that were laid off are rejoicing to get rid of the headache and BS that comes along with the role and it's ridiculous, unrealistic metrics. Congrats to all that no longer have the Humana headache. What a sigh of relief it should be for you.

They refuse to give how many people were " impacted" by this restructuring. I find it sad that this company is such a mess. It irritates me to hear the upper management say to be empathetic to those affected but we need you to pick up the pace and do 3 x more. Screw that ! I'm outta here as soon as I can !

What happens to everyone's 401K's? Do we have an option to roll over or are they automatically paid out?

I want to thank everyone for your posting and feedback from your experiences. We are not being told anything at all about what is going on within the company. I have learned so much just by reading this. Please keep posting with updates. I am a rostered HCM RN. I had no idea dialer teams had those strict metrics. The metrics have become INSANE over the last 6 years.

Not surprised by any of this info; there seems to be a concerted effort to force resignations by creating stress, frustration & diminished feelings of worth. A toxic environment, for sure, & a total distrust of management.

Phc here for Hccp. 10 people were laid off from our team yesterday, top performing team, exceeding metrics, we need answers to why this happened. Has the media got wind of this?

There are no rules for the Hcc's because they only want an RN degree or an MSW so if you have a Masters in business or a masters in counseling they don't want it so in less you want to take a customer service job at a substantial pay cut and that you're bilingual which is the requirement listed on the site there are absolutely no job openings

That is so weird. I am a-- and we haven't been told anything. Our queues have increased in the last couple of weeks, so that seems strange to be told not to refer. The whole situation is a mess....so many people being told different things. It will be interesting to see what else happens.

HCM RNs were instructed to no longer refer to SS for community resources but to do it ourselves. This was as of 1/25/

It's all very confusing. Nurses are being trained in SS roles and SS's are being given rosters and care management training. The HCC's have been eliminated and some Che's as well. The PHC's that were laid off cannot even apply for positions in the company. The HCC's can do that at least. Are they going to make the SS role a combo of all these positions? Or are SS's on the chopping block as well. It's very unsettling. Ss's are training nurses on the position like training your replacement. All our coach says is stay positive. She offers no information and claims to be clueless about what is going on. This is transparency?

Post ID: @axs+LEoMV4c

My HCM RN team has also been dropping like flies. The increased metric demands in addition to now finding out we have to fill the SS role is making each call lengthier. And there is the new CGX software system which does not appear to help speed up our charting. Tomorrow will be interesting indeed.

I'm sure tomorrow we are going hear a bunch of corporate bs. We all got the email about how this is "placement for success" or some ridiculous wording for "layoff." Be prepared to hear about how this is simply a "challenge" and they will be expecting even MORE from us now. We should unquestionably rise to the challenge and thank them for the opportunity to SERVE AS MANY MEMBERS AS WE CAN EVERYDAY. Yes master, please don't whip me master. HELL NO, I'm outta here as soon as I can line up other work God willing.

So sad and heartless. They want more and more and keep raising expectations then tell us be thankful for our jobs. Being salaried employee does not mean endless hours. We are all working well past 8 daily, mixddng lunch and breaks and stressed. Suffering depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, ulcers and many other illnesses

We live I our members and they would never want us to work like this with these conditions.

Moral is so low and yet the suits in office could care less.

Certainly not proud I work there like I used to be

The information presented in this article is accurate and a slap to the faces of the great nurses who serve this company. Running away from this position that you worked so hard to get might not be the best game plan. My advice to each of you is to continue to work hard and keep a log of your extra hours of work. Politely communicate the extra hours of work to your supervisor by e-mail who will likely be indifferent, and continue to work hard in your job. At some point, either as an organized group or individual, hire a large group of attorneys that specialize in overtime claims and bring on a law suit against this bully of a company. You will eventually get your overtime compensation and have satisfaction that this bully will get what it deserves. Thank you for allowing me to share my opinion.
