My cobra costs for my wife and I are $1000 a month just for the medical part. Looks like HW contributed about 70% when I was working.

If on severance, COBRA is available after severance ends.
Does COBRA start as soon as you are laid off, or after your severance pay stops?
A co-worker who retired last year told me that he was quoted a COBRA premium for himself and his wife at between $800 and $900 (don't remember the exact amount). And that premium is for this year, right? Next year will probably be higher.
