Yes, if they even show up at all. some groups at Intel (business side) have a much more laxed environment, so working from home is the norm and not the exception. First level managers is no different. Go to certain buildings on any Friday, anytime, and you can hear crickets. It's amazing.
I am one of those gaming the system. Have been doing this for 10 years. I know this ride may end soon, but as long as I am good with ppt and Excel, the cream keeps rising for me.
To put the layoffs in perspective, ACT took out many more productive, useful, caring employees than it did useless ones.

There are no shortage of people at Intel who are extremely busy with useless activities. That's really the problem: Intel has become so internally-focused that time, resources and priority have been shifted toward internal BS (and away from customers, the external marketplace, real innovation, etc.
What's worse is that for many employees at Intel, this (i.e. playing the Intel "game") is ALL they know and how they "succeeded" for so many years. And we wonder why Intel has strategy and execution problems...

Four good productive hours devoid of status reports, corp reqired training, bums, dums, etc. are way more valuable than 12 hours most (claim to) put in. Many "work" on (or order some up from their TA or PE) powerpoints and then attend nonstop meetings verbally jousting with other people doing the same. Hence actual work out the door is minimal. If it werent so tragic it would be funny.

Person arriving late could have attended early morning meetings and worked from home. Parking and traffic is not always conducive to coming into the office. You don't even know how many multiple jobs or projects they are handling at the same time.
Some people attend late night calls or work , could be leaving early to take care of personal things in order to spend several hours at night working.
Just showing up to time in the office is not indication of productivity or efficiency.

Absolutely. I have also known URMs who arrive constantly late for work while the rest of us cover for them. In addition the same people regularly leave for the day much earlier than anyone else in the department, and no reprimands or punishment. The guys covering are intensely questioned by mgmt about project status, even though they are not responsible for the URM output. This is one reason of the animosity that is being portrayed.
