We need to stop focusing so much on the RIFs and imminent furloughs, and pay more attention to the threat of outsourcing. It has never been so threatening in fact. Think about it. I am in aero (one of the areas of aero that will likely skate through these lean times unscathed) and I know the threat of Brno, Beijing and Bangalore/Hydrabad taking good jobs is more real today than it was even a year ago. We have employees in the site I work at that oversee software architecture teams in "developing" countries. No work is done in North America in more cutting edge areas (like SATCOM). A handful of furloughs and a few RIFs are nothing compared to the threat of these jobs moving permanently overseas. The best thing you can do for your country and for yourself, is to leave the company and go to a startup with the hopes that you'll put off mass outsourcing and keep a chunk of the wealth we still have left. Otherwise your six figure salary will shrink once costs rise to the point where your retirement is diminished.

Thank God for some export controlled work that can t be off shored
agree with the OP. If you are 40 years old or younger, you can count on good paying jobs being harder and harder to find. You can thank our government for encouraging it.
