Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

On the verge

Sorry for double posting this, but wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to read it...

I've been at Honeywell Aerospace for almost 10 years, having worked my way to the position of Senior Manager. Have been through 3 furloughs in 9 months, with another one apparently looming in December.

In 2016, Aerospace required that management implement and drive an initiative to increase Productivity by 20% this year. I, along with many other mid-level managers, have been successfully flowing this to our teams with excellent results, and have saved Honeywell many, many thousands of dollars in increased productivity and reduced waste.

So, how have we, and our team of engineers, inspectors, technicians and supervisors, been recognized for saving Honeywell so much money?

Zero merit increase this year

Talk of zero merit increase next year

Talk of 3-10% salary reduction next year

Three confirmed furloughs this year (~ 6% loss in salary)

A fourth furlough likely, which would then be 8% loss in salary. This is 3-4 house payments for most people).

For those that are Band 4, the incentive plan has been reduced by 5%.

Why am I sharing? Just to vent, I suppose. Everyone has their own triggers in life, or to put it another way, the straws in life that will break the camel's back.

For me, the trigger is that fourth furlough.

If another one happens in December, I have told myself that I will accept the job offer that I have pending with a major competitor. I will be gone. And I suspect that many others like me, in management, will follow.

I certainly hope that some of the big boys on Mahogany Row are reading this.

I'm the OP and did end up accepting the new position. Decided to take a lateral position w/ a 10% increase w/ regular raises, rather than staying and taking another 10% furlough loss, no raises, reduced bonus and crappy health insurance. Not to mention the strong possibility of being RIF'd entirely.

Like I mentioned earlier, I've been on the fence. But the 20% swing was enough to sway me to the new company. Longer drive, but peace of mind knowing that my career will not be sinking on the U.S.S. Kotex.

Thanks to everyone for helping me to see the light.

Just remember the strategy of furlough IS to get people to leave voluntarily...this saves honeywell severance package and job placement assistance costs...as DC stated in 2013...a RIF employee takes 6 months ROI...driving folks to quit is money in leadetships pocket. I will ride this out and see what happens...make sure you collect unemployment for furloughs and develop a secondary income...this is the new honeywell.. ..need a part time job to be an Aerospace Engineer.

The game is not only to buy HON stock but to buy & sell as it rises and lowers. Catch the small waves. My 401k is averaging 11% ROI. Don't just buy and hold and think the 401K will magically grow. Remember too, if you leave, the 401K rolls with you. Invest well!

@OP. I hope you changed your mind and accepted that new position. Tell HON HIM to get f*cked and do what is best for you and your family.

So here's how I see it, age or otherwise: Honeywell is being hollowed out by Cote & Friends. The company will be broken up into smaller pieces and sold off to the highest bidder. The bennies have been reduced to next to nothing, bonuses -----> will be phased out for those in Band 4 and lower, there's an ongoing herd culling each time the bar is raised to new heights of the absurd as they do things like limit the option of working from home. Or chronic rounds of layoffs and riffs. Those who have the option of leaving, should be looking elsewhere for work. Honeywell has nothing to offer anymore. It's on the chopping block. 401ks can be rolled over, those of us who will have pensions can invest them elsewhere, health insurance plans are interchangeable for many of us. The writing is on the wall. Take note.

Thanks Plymouth Feels Your Pain. Fun fact, I worked at Golden Valley for a few years before I realized that Honeywell was a sinking ship, and got the heck out of there.

Friend, Boston says it best: DON'T LOOK BACK!

"Don't look back

A new day is breakin'

It's been too long since I felt this way

I don't mind where I get taken

The road is callin'

Today is the day

I can see

It took so long to realize

I'm much too strong

Not to compromise

Now I see what I am is holding me down

I'll turn it around

I finally see the dawn arrivin'

I see beyond the road I'm drivin'

Far away and left behind

It's a new horizon and I'm awakin' now

Oh I see myself in a brand new way

The sun is shinin'

The clouds are breakin'

Cause I can't lose now, there's no game to play

I can tell

There's no more time left to criticize

I've seen what I could not recognize

Everything in my life was leading me on

But I can be strong

I finally see the dawn arrivin'

I see beyond the road I'm drivin'

Far away and left behind

Don't look back"

When it is no longer worth it for someone to stay, it is time to leave to greener pastures. Folks with Honeywell and SAP skills do not stay unemployed very long.

@OP. You are c-r-a-z-y for waiting sir. Call them on Monday and accept that offer. I agree with my fellow posters; why wait? There's no value for you to stay at HON. You said it yourself:

Zero merit increase this year

Talk of zero merit increase next year

Talk of 3-10% salary reduction next year

Three confirmed furloughs this year (~ 6% loss in salary)

A fourth furlough likely, which would then be 8% loss in salary. This is 3-4 house payments for most people).

For those that are Band 4, the incentive plan has been reduced by 5%.

You forgot to mention no dental insurance in 2017 along with no more working from home. WFH is a real benefit; now that you have to drive into the office every single day, you now have to factor in oil changes, gas, depreciation on your vehicle, and time. Those things are now hitting your bottom line every month. Dave is stealing money from us to pay Wall Street and leave plenty of stolen money to fund his island getaway while the rest of us scramble to make ends meet.

2017 is going to be full of more benefit reductions, 4 weeks of furlough and more RIFs. The game as they, is up. It's for every single employee in HON worth their salt to leave, and leave right now. There is literally nothing left for the employees; no pay increases, no job security and more cuts in compensation.

Thanks for all of the feedback. To be honest, I do enjoy my job at Honeywell and the people that I work with. I guess the reason why I've drawn that fourth furlough as my "line in the sand" is so that I can tell myself that I've hung in there as long as possible, so that when I look back, there are no regrets.

The new job would be a longer commute, but obviously the compensation and benefits are head and shoulders above Honeywell's. It would result with a little less time with family, but the positives would be job stability, increased morale and not having to worry about supporting my family anymore.

The offer is open to me for another week or so. By then, I would expect that the "fourth furlough" have been announced. That's really all I'm waiting for.

Why wait, take the offer and move on. We lost 10% back in 2009-2010 and have never recovered that sacrifice for the company and you will never catch up to the salary level you should be at. In Daves latest interview with his pal at mad money, he stated that aero was not doing that bad, busineess jet was down but commercial and military was doing fine. So why the furloughs and layoffs? Oh yeah, to give a quick cash injection for the stockholders and to mask a decade of poor planning and management. Even if aero was for sale who would want it? No new R&D, old platforms and old technology. Now we are going to be a player in the saturated software industry? These so called leaders are just idiots

@ the OP- do not wait. The 4th furlough is 100% confirmed. We discussed it in the last MOR, along with the 2017 furloughs. If You have an offer, take it and don't look back. Try to give HON as little notice as possible but whatever you do, do NOT wait. I'm actively looking for other opportunities along with most of my peers. As soon as I have an offer, I'm going to take it and give HON a one day notice! Here's my badge, laptop and cell phone; I quit!

you should not be loyal to this company and wait until this opportunity is gone. leave now while you can and never look back

At this point, the writing is on the wall. You already identified the problem and have a solution in hand. Why would you not just take this offer with a competitor? Don't you have a set of morals or principles? I would never sit back and take this corporate abuse unless I had no other option.

They are. They have to be. If managers, senior managers, and the like are checking this site, you can bet that the mahogany row types are well aware of it also.

The real question is, do they care? Those who are close to you undoubtedly do, but those who have the power to effect real change, likely don't. If they did, then it's doubtful you would ever have found yourself having to contemplate leaving in the first place.
