Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Dirty work surfaces and pant sizes aside;

Mr. Mahoney's stated reasoning regarding team work and collaboration do not stand up to scrutiny, and will stand up even less so with Honeywell's drive to be a software company.

I currently work in north Phoenix and have been one of the telecommuters. I do this for a number of reasons, primary among them is, the people I work most directly with are overseas. I actually do not, for primary job related functions, interface with anyone at my actual physical job location. The person in my work group who is also in the same state, is 15 miles away. My management isn't even local.

The only thing this change will do, is compel me to spend somewhere around 80 minutes of my day, each day, burning fossil fuels to commute to a cubicle I don't really need, to be around people I don't actually work with.

This change raises fuel costs to employees, raises accident risk rates by increasing driving time exposure, increases national fuel usage and local pollution rates, increases wear and tear on roads, and facilities while not actually adding any real benefit to the company.

It will, logically, also increase the occurrence of sick days. I haven't taken a single sick day since working remotely because, no matter how sick I was, I could at least either bring my laptop to my sick bed with me, or get out of bed, shuffle down the hall and take care of important items as needed, take meetings, and deal whatever bug I had without risk of passing it along to the rest of the work group, or being too medicated to drive effectively.

Instead of looking at unused work spaces as an opportunity to do something different with the work spaces, by either expanding facilities or using them for new growth like an innovative, creative, developing company does the company went backwards into an inflexible, brown shoe'ed, world view that fails to take into account how a large chunk of the company actually works.

Very short sighted for sure. Many of us will not have face to face time even onsite. This is a global company spread across the world. This is the way Honeywell chooses to do business so how can you cut off the very core method to support a global company across many timezomes? Absolutely ridiculous policy. Basically, they are saying they no longer trust managers to manage their people. If the managers are happy and employee x is getting good reviews and performing well, who cares where they are sitting to do it. The truth is we work longer hours from home, have way less sick time, and save the company money. Has anyone bithered to calculate the cost of square footage in an office building? it is expensive and costs Honeywell millions.

if you feel Telecommuting is so beneficial, then send your request & rationale to Tim M. for approval. Some of these sound like whining while others sound valid. I would love to see the Tim M. response on this blog. C'mon someone that is close to retirement can do it.

Normal business hours for you but I guarantee you those guys are calling from home because it's not business hours for them.

Not everyone is effected by this policy but most people are and it's a terrible short sighted decision.

Honeywell = the Yahoo of Aerospace. Following their footsteps.

In my org, the global resources call into our meetings during our normal business hours. The only afterhours meetings are with customers. This seems reasonable to me.

I got clarification from my Mgr. The e-mail was very carefully worded. Everyone needs to be in the office during core business hours, but you can work as much extra as needed to get your job done. I heard from the IT guys that developed the reporting for badge in/out of each plant... ALT will be checking. I am fairly sure this will be short lived, If any of us owned a business we would do the same periodically. Who wouldn't want to know where and what the people they pay are doing.

This sums it up very well. Leaderships ignorance is beyond belief. I knew B. Smith and Madsen didn't like it but I though common sense would prevail.

I've got to think this too shall pass but in my case it's after an hour and a half drive each way not working even at an Aero site.

We will see by months end.
