Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Dear Ryan....

Well, you screwed the pooch big time, haven't you. You must be a real fan of movies to have Purge 1 (April 2015), Purge 2 (October 2015) and heading into the sequel Purge-Election Year. How appropriate.

I survived, or should I say suffered through, Purge 1. Yes, we probably had some fat to trim, and the COST team was passing out the Kool-Aid to help us believe how the people left behind could tighten our belts and weather the storm. What a bunch of crap. Most of the targets were high seniority people who could have retired but were clinging to a paycheck (and I don't fault them for that). And COP did dump some new hires to drive down the average age of the pool of layoffs lest someone wanted to sue for age discrimination. Which, if you wanted to get the 60 week severance package that most people laid off were eligible for, you had to sign away your rights to sue. Remember the people laid off in the first round? One minute they were in their office, called to a conference room, never to be heard from again. Real classy.

Heading into Purge 2 was agonizing. People were stressed out. It all seemed so futile in the months leading up to October. Hardly any work was getting done (if people are honest with themselves) because either you'd get laid off and what was the f*cking point of killing yourself to get things done? Not the time to try and impress, because the layoff list was decided long ago. And if one survived the layoff, then presumably there would be time to catch up on the work that was being slow-poked months earlier.

I got the October call to come to the conference room. Remember the grading that went on earlier that year, and whether you would relocate and sh*t like that? Guess my 2 rating was just a smokescreen. I went up there fully knowing what this meant. My manager shoved a letter towards me they signed, saying I was part of a "workforce reduction". Then they left and I was trying to make sense of it all while HR pressed on telling me of all my benefits (?) of the severance package. My time with COP was less than 4 years, so the payout was no lottery winning.

If I still had access to a COP computer, I would have printed out Ryan's and Don Hrap's pictures, laminated them, and installed them in the bathroom urinals. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to provide meaningful feedback directly to Ryan and Don. I suppose they could have been put at the bottom of a toilet for a more formal face to face encounter.

Let me say that this layoff round is no surprise. Prior to last year's layoffs, COP was budgeting on $60 oil. Most people knew (other than COP leadership) that was going to take at least a year or more to happen. Here we are at the next Purge supposedly budgeting on $45 oil, and I'm thinking nobody better hold their breath.

If you get tapped this time around, there is life after COP. And you might find it quite refreshing after living through the last two years of misery, with no respite in site.

So Ryan, thanks. You royally screwed this company if you don't have the balls to admit it, or the brains to recognize it. As far as I'm concerned, you're nothing but a miserable, low-life, scum-s---ing, pus-filled pimp-stick blowhard with absolutely no moral conscience or regard to what you laughingly call COP's greatest assets - their people.

Well said. I feel the pain too. I was a Purge 1 participant, never had a rating below 2 since I began at COP for those who think it was 'fat-trimming' time

Poor management, bad business decision. Really not surprised. The company is shrinking and sliding down. Glad we are out of the sinking boat.
