Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

I would have bought TI, or Nvidia, or Qualcomm - ARM

Intel should NOT have exited out of the mobile race, instead - 10B spent needs to be part of the long term plan. Intel should have purchased before any others: TI, Nvidia, or Qualcomm - if possible:

Here is what I see as the future:

  1. Your smart phone will literally carry EVERYTHING you care /work/home about -

  2. Your smart phone IS your work PC - Think a cradle at your desk - you drop in..BAM - Your three monitors now are alive -Cadence/allegro, excel, web development - NO ISSUE at all, your phone is MORE than powerful - or some back room server helps out with processing for say movie rendering/editing- .

  3. Home - again you come home drop your smart phone in a cradle - Bam your are now able to upload todays pics, videos and, answer calls, text etc-voice activated.

  4. I see Android as the ONLY OS for EVERYTHING - IOS will be secondary

  5. Yes, all your data will be uploaded/off loaded into the cloud without any issues, everywhere - free wifi everywhere - it is coming or already here in some towns.

For Intel to ONLY be part of the cloud..well..that is only 10% of the picture - Thoughts?

Why should or would intel have to acquire anyone? They have thousand and thousands of designers. The design teams tower over the number of people used at every other design house in number for similar designs. There is no need to buy anyone the problem is a management one. The management problem is nobody in the design groups has much experience of what the outside can do with less so none are willing to risk their careers to attempt schedule and scope that is competitive with the leading design houses. Intel teams manage to not to fail and they have no competition, it is like the US Defense industry in scope and efficiency.

The few external people we hired from Qualcomm are sadly not enough to change the course of the Titanic.

@bxb: Disposing of XScale and in-house ARM SOCs was done by then idiot-in-chief Barret.

There were ARM based devices developed at Intel (JF2) similar to smartphones (Linux-based like Android, similar size, battery driven, touch-screen, cellular access, etc) around '02 or '03.

I've workeed at TI in OMAP division.

We were 1500 in OMAP BU ( Design, SW, Validation, Business, Marketing ....) whereas at Intel you need 15 000 engineers to do the 5same.

WTH are you talking about? QCOM had higher market valuation than Intel couple of years back. TI sold its mobile div to Google long time ago. Nvidia tegra processor is not doing that great and loosing market share. They may get out too.

Intel is trying to base a new scale advantage on IoT. We all know how that is going LOL.

Mica bracelets, jimmy bots, reality tv toothbrushes - these are all BS and will never deliver the scale of mobile devices.

You can already see the scale effects.

Intel is shrinking and reducing investments due to the PC client falling off a cliff.

TSMC is growing and increasing investments - same with Samsung due to mobile.

You can see how th endgame is going to play out here.

Pretty much correct.

Except Intel is at risk in the cloud as well.

Volume drives performance.

Watch as the foundries surpass Intel due to massive amounts of volume (dollars). This new process dominance will allow ARM partners to exceed Xeon performance and take the cloud as well. It's the same playbook Intel used in the 90s to displace the high end RISCs. The client is the most important piece as it has all of the volume which gives you a huge economy of scale advantage.

Clowns at Intel didn't understand this. PSO majorly dropped the ball with Apple and now they have scale. If he accepted and built an ARM processor for Apple he could have successfully denied scale to TSMC and Samsung. Too late to do anything about it now. Just watch Intel turn into a relic like DEC.

Instead of wasting their money on McAfee and Altera, they should of purchased a maker of ARM. Of course they did have it back in the late 90's but like everything else Intel does, they phucked up!
