Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Question: How are all the 6 month+ laid off people doing now? Did you find other jobs, relocate or are you still searching?

I'm wondering how all of you are doing? I was laid off and <5 years experience, and have not found any decent opportunities so far. Everything so far has been < 30% what I was making before.

Same thing here. I've been searching for about 6 months and haven't found anything I would like doing. I applied for 4 jobs early on and was not selected for an interview. Other jobs that sound interesting are too far outside my travel area. I think it's my age (58) that's holding me back. I'm now contacting a couple of consulting companies who specialize in recruiting seasoned professionals and providing a source of contract workers for their clients.

@-5jjm, You're funny!! We can't get enough of the "Everyone is a pathetic loser but me for trolling this site and insulting other people but it's OK for me to do that" commentators. Are you planning on working for Hillary's campaign? You would fit right in!

@5iic, do you have a double personality or just like to pretend to follow up on your own posts? Pathetic loser.

Where's the poor guy who always chimes in about his poor condition not having a job or a woman or any prospects? I wish he would get some help. He tries to redirect his condition on others as if that will cure it. He needs to sign up for a dating site. Isn't that how you guys do it these days? I guess they don't want a guy with no job though. Catch-22.

Yes- "Once that happens" ROTFLMAO!! Make sure you get signed up for Unemployment benefits just in case, sweetie - Good luck, you will need it, LOL! (spare us the made-up snappy comeback about how you are a multimillionaire drinking a martini at the pool - blah blah blah, we've heard them all)

I started my own consulting company. I am a 30+ year guy who is not hurting, just don't like sitting around. I have guaranteed work pending on a partnership of two companies. They are waiting on the boards approval, once that happens then I will get some work at a lawyer like hourly rate. I wish everyone the best!

Not long after I left Chevron, I sunk into the blues after a short while. I bought a harmonica with the last of my severance pay and meandered my way down the railroad tracks to the outskirts of town with my friend, Jim Beam. There I met Johnny Walker from DWEP and Jack Daniels from AMBU, both former side kicks from the good ole days. Don't know what I'll do. Down on my luck and drinking myself half blind. Singing the blues all day and through the night with my little Horner. I'm a blowing hard, bouncing, sweaty, whirling dervish of a bluesman, roaring my vocals and all but sucking the reeds right out of my defenseless little harmonica with all my lung power. Whiskey river, please carry me away.

For me it's drinking beer, smoking weed and eating pizza :-)

It's college deja vu all over again without the classes.

I took 6 months off after getting layed off. After I started it took me 5 months to find a job that met my salary requirements. I do have lots of non oil field experience that may have helped.

OP, things are difficult out there, but not impossible. There is work, but don't expect the same pay and benefits you had at Chevron. Hopefully, you haven't over extended yourself in debt and obligations. I feel I'm one of the lucky ones. I got laid off lady year. I tried searching for a job that was meaningful to me with equal pay. Nothing yet. However after 26 years with Chevron, I did well in the Wall Street casino and my 401k grew to over $1MM. I also was fortunate to have a small balance on my mortgage, which I paid off with 1/3 of my severance. I'm debt free and living off my Chevron pension annuity and other investments I accumulated over the years. I know I'm not the typical Chevron employee who was cut short of their time, but you asked, and I'm telling you. Not looking to rub salt in anyone's wound either. Best of luck to everyone in this unfortunate downturn. I wish I was still working. My work was worth more to me than what I'm living today.

i am just sitting around. I stay up late at night and get up around 10. I am making peace with myself for the situation I find myself in. There are many others in worse shape than I am. Jobs are almost non-existant, and the ones that are posted are probably fake in the sense that an H1-B visa person has already been selected. Welcome to forced diversity, multi-culturalism and the new global economy. Maybe, just maybe, hiring will be healthy by next summer. For the younger ones who lost their job (under 40), you will find that almost no one will want to hire an ex-oil industry professional if it is in a different industry. If you are single, try your best to find a new career path. Ignore those who post about how great their 30+ year career at chevron has been and how they have 1 million plus in their 401k and a great pension. Those people just like to rub salt in the wounds of others.

Took early retirement and gambled on stock market casino with severance pay and lump sum so far the return was on par with monthly pay. I know the good time may not last but has raining day funds set aside for the next two years. Enjoyed the jobless, no work commitment & stress free days very much. There is still life past CVX though.

It's cyclical. This isn't news.

The past is the past. Your previous pay means nothing. Currently your salary is $0. So long at it as a pay increase and do the job.
