@1qnu ha! you noticed that too? IC career path at Intel- suck as an IC, get job as GL, suck as GL, get job as staff engineer. Pretty much the ONLY way past G8 as IC. They got what they deserve.
"Many PEs might have been good engineers at a point in their past but Intel ruined them, turned them into power point rangers and politicians that don't actually contribute anything useful most of the time. Their fat salary could not be justified by any company not experiencing 62% margins."
Too true. Intel - culture and structure - couldn't do more to discourage real innovation from PE's or from other employees
Getting to be a PE requires being chosen by Intel management and more often than not a commitment and mastery of "managing up" - leaving good ideas behind in order to do whatever random thing that comes from above, without question and in a way that strokes the ego of whatever senior person proposed.
The Emperors frequently have no clothes but PEs (VPs and those gunning for PE) will be the last to point it out.
Any we wonder why so many bad ideas come to multi-billion dollar fruition!
The vast majority of PEs in my site contribute almost nothing in terms of innovation and play political games. Most are ex-managers who went back to being ICs and got a PE title as a compensation.
A very few PEs are innovators who really advance the company and the industry.

"To become a PE you need at least 15 to 20 years of making up data, presenting power point bs to get all the credit, and most importantly being a manager's pet. The backbone are the technicians and engineers who bust their asses at Intel."
There are a couple PE's in my group who used those skills (and few others) to get PE in <10 years
Don't forget a good chunk of HR. Those in HR doing social engineering are worthless and helping to destroy the company. Or should i say 'fundamentally transform' it
@ 1fnt - spoken like a true suck-up. Most of the PE's got to their position by favoritism (from their manager) , taking credit for others work and powerpoint engineering. Then there are the "diverse" PE's i.e. women who were randomly promoted. There was a graphic on circuit recently stating that the number of women PE's went from 12 to 22 in 1 year. Clearly they weren't promoted on merit....

PE's are the engine behind the company's growth. They're being held back by the 6:1 ratio of VP's to PE's, positions that are supposedly equivalent. Yet whenever promo announcements come out, there are about 50-100 new VP's and a dozen PE's. Agree on VP's, but the PE's need to stay.
Just what Intel needs... LOL
