Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Warning for prospective senior employees

Probably you will not see this message. I hope you do. Please DO NOT join Intel. Intel puts up a really nice show to attract senior external talent to the company. Don't be fooled by it. I have been at Intel <1 year. I regretted my decision almost every day. I have had many unhappy days and sleepless nights. It is a horrible place for a senior external hire. The core issue is your direct manager - you have unqualified, incompetent people managing you. In no other company these people will be hired for their positions. To cover their lack of competence compared to their senior outside employee, these managers use micro-management, aggressive, directive style with you. They take credit for your work. They will make your work life unbearable. As long as these people (anti bodies, cancer whatever You call them) stay and be protected, Intel will not have a good future.

Most experienced external hires are not staying very long at Intel. it is just toxic for talented, experienced people. Leaders of the company do not walk the talk - there is no meritocracy. Favoritism is the only way. As long as you are one of the executives' favorite, no skills, prior experience required. Intel ostentatiously said that it is laying off its bottom performers in April. I doubt most of those people were low performers. I see a plenty of no or low value employees around.

Intel can't hire/retain new employees other than new graduates - even most of those do not come from top schools anymore...

Yep came in with 10 years experience got treated like an RCG. One (of many) first impressions is that logical consistent cross org business process are severely lacking and people re-invent the wheel over and over and over. Madness for a company of this size.

"Interesting to know that this is a prevalent Intel culture. I was also brought in as a senior but was given tasks which interns were doing. I thought my dept managers are just disorganized. Will start looking for another job instead of waiting for a low performance review."

Unfortunately, this is self re-inforcing: Intel hires senior, experienced, successful people from outside...then manage them in ways that ensure that they can't demonstrate any of those skills...then give them nebulous direction...and then a poor rating, if they haven't already left.

Unfortunately my experience has been the same. only staying due to a poor job market in my Geo. My group is essentially an old boys club of guys that have been doing this for 20 years and have no desire to see any outsider succeed or contribute beyond a trivial level.

My last dumb manager was literally taking afternoon nap break from 2pm to 4pm. He was living close to intel FM office and it was a routine and everyone knew!! He is surviving in intel by hosting drink and food parties in his home every other week to his "best" asslickers and his managers!!

a manager once said that the No of meetings in your calendar indicate how import you are... and another manager once commented that the meetings helped to make his days go faster and ofter we saw him dozed during meeting especially there is techniqual discussion... Imagine all these!

@1cpo - That cracked me up! 😂

It is EXACTLY like an AA meeting. And make no mistake, Intel does become an addiction, especially if it's your first job out of college, as in my case. 15 years through, and going out next week after taking VSP. Hard to make the decision at first, but now starting to feel much better. Intel used to be a great place to start your career (not sure if that's the case anymore), but corporate culture has degraded to the point of it being a HORRIBLE place for senior talent. Steer clear while you can!

"Yep! Me too! I've been at Intel for three years, came from a startup environment. Joining the Intel corporate behemoth was a mistake. My intention is to get my resume in order and get out but I'm so mentally and emotionally exhausted from the Intel culture that I haven't been able to work on my resume."

A calendar packed with back to back to back meetings all day about....nothing.

I love it when Intel meetings start up like an AA meeting: 'Hi, my name is * from *** group and I have been with Intel for XX years'

Wow - I could have written this myself!

This WAS my story...brought on board as a senior external hire...treated like garbage by my idiot manager and her boss...and then given ISP after my first full year FOCAL (S/SL4).

It was a bizarre and unfortunate experience that I wouldn't wish onto anyone who I cared the least bit about,

When I worked there I got the idea that promotions to FLM and SLM were to people who lacked technical skills but were great organizers.

You must be kidding us all. Great organizers?! Like BK??? They don't know how to organize/take care of two sheep, sketched on the paper.

Spot on, it's the same story for every external hire. Intel should stick only promoting their internal employees as they don't know how to integrate the external talent into their ages old and sick culture within. Most people quit within no time seeing these arrogant thick skinned people inside who has not seen a world outside Intel and don't have open mind to listen to ideas external experience brings. They will ruin your life in no time and all you will be is their slaves in few months. For FLM and SLMs in Intel it's always "my way or highway". Think really 100 times before joining this circus. The worst project manager I had , knows how to talk very good.

I guess this is Intel. Sorry to join this company, I'm out within a few months.

The core issue is all of Management. The direct manager gets misguided directives from group management. There're all rotten.

Not from intel.

But seriously Intel is having retention issues with RCGs?

I never expected that.

These people (direct managers) are pure disaster. Catastrophe. EGO trip morons. Only <10% of them are decent. Rest are stinky garbage.

Similar experience. You are treated like an RCG when you start. Expect 1-2 months of sitting at your desk watching propaganda videos before your manager will show up and start the process of finding work for you.

Find work for you????

Yes it's true. You were not hired for a position or an area of responsibility. You were hired because you met some vague dept objective to hire experienced people.

Good Luck To You!

Wow, and I thought what OP experienced was just my experience. Spot on. It's all about control. Upper management wants to be decoupled, yet have direct control over IC's work load to meet schedules. Those managers just above IC are the slave drivers with whips and chains. They play games with the IC's: favoritism, information hording, micro-management, badgering, harassing, belittling... So glad to be out of that environment.

Hello OP. I hope you did hide very well your source IP. Since you are talking The Truth, which will attract many viewers of this topic, and quite few of them will be CCG arrogant (with BIG EGOs) directors, and IOTG ignorant managers, asking INTEL HR and INTEL Legal to abort/stop abuse on "innocent" INTEL managerial staff! ;-)

My experience with INTEL is the same. Nothing matter, these experienced people are assimilated into INTEL weird culture, and put as mental slaves to serve their ignorant and arrogant managers, who have no idea about anything which comes outside INTEL (just INTEL internal politics). They did not care, they do not care, and they think they will not care... :-))

Well, sad that INTEL is a falling knife! Never try to catch falling knife, you might get hurt badly!
