Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

What will the future hold

Another year and no raises, another year and the vcip looks to be smaller than even last year. I don't know for sure but expect it. They lowered our 401k match and other small perks are now gone. That, along with the two layoffs last year and fears of another this year. How long before people start just leaving? Can the company recover if too many good people say the hell with all this and find something else? This company has stood out for so many years because the employees couldn't find another place that offered so much to them. It is starting to look like any other company. Why do the employees seem to bear the brunt of the downturn while the execs still fly around in their private jets and still make literally hundreds times more than the employees? I don't care how much the CEO and too execs make but when employees are the only ones feeling the pinch the culture has become toxic. Go ahead and say it, "you are lucky to have a job." I can get a job almost anywhere, I chose COP because of the culture and I felt the company truly cared about employees. Overall I am saying I understand cuts have to be made in a downturn but why does it all fall on our shoulders?

Agreed. OP is a blind narcissistic loser. I got news for you old man, nobody gives a shit. Nobody cares that your job skills are transferable in every industry. The fact that you're still at COP despite your horrible experience tells us you can't find anything else, so stop with the false bragging. You seem to dislike working here but continue to do so despite you claiming you can be your own boss or find a similar job with equal pay- this shows how big of a pussy you are. All this points to the fact that you are an utter failure who can't do any better than where you are right now. So stop with the accusations and excuses. Either shows us all up and quit, or continue taking it up the ass like the beta pussy that you are. You're not fooling anyone with your fake act.

To the moron that said I know nothing. you really should stay here because you are obviously too stupid to go anywhere else. Your reading and comprehension skills are lacking. Did you miss the statement that I can work almost anywhere. See, I chose a career that wasn't dependent on one industry. I am not a geoscientist or leatherneck, or any of the other people that can only working oil/gas. I actually know very little about this industry and It doesn't affect how good I am at my job. My skill set is actually needed at just about every company/organization in the world. Yes, I am worried that people will leave and it will hurt those that are left behind. The good thing is if I leave and get another job that pays me a handsome salary I won't have to work with you anymore. Next time read the post, understand the post, then reply. Idiot!

lol @ "Can the company recover if too many good people say the hell with all this and find something else". You clearly know nothing. Nobody in oil and gas is hiring. If you're so confident in that, leave. See how long it'll take you to find your next job.

In downturns, bonus and raises are simply not good business. Yes, many supporting job functions can and will leave (e.g., accounting, supply chain, IT) but the guts of an E&P company are geoscience, engineering, and land. Unfortunately, the blokes currently in charge did not learn any lessons from history about supply and demand. Maybe the new asset owners will not be so greedy and stupid.

Actually isn't it closer to 27 million, and when the company is floundering maybe the CEO could lead by example and not give himself a 5 million dollar raise while laying off people and freezing salaries. Come enjoy the suck with the rest of us. Maybe give up one of those exclusive jets.

If the guy who makes 20 million a year wasn't around, there wouldn't even be a company for you to work for in the first place.

Without any incentive we will lose some people, those that are skilled enough and young enough will probably leave. Unfortunately after some have invested 20+ plus years and put in those extra hours feel like they can't because even though age isn't supposed to matter, let's face it, it does if they want to start over somewhere else. I would be curios to see how many of them seriously consider filing those retirement papers. I am not at that point but so I can only hold on to hope or start looking looking elsewhere. Luckily for me, my profession is a supporting role and I can work for any company and industry. I only recently ventured into this arena. Too bad, I thought this would be the place I would retire. I guess only time will tell where I end up. My direct supervisor is very fair and I like the people I work with, I have to do what is right for me though. One thing I learned is big companies really only look out for the stockholders and the bottom line. It has been gut wrenching but it might be time to start over elsewhere.

What's hard to take is when the guy telling you you're not getting a 3% merit increase makes 20+ million dollars a year. Makes you want to punch somebody in the face, namely the guy who makes 20+ million dollars a year.

The company does not have a business model for oil in the $30 range. Odd to focus on compensation (or lack of) from a company without a business model to stay in business. The next quarter will only be much much worse.
