Didn't such a trend deviate when Obama became the president? Look at Merck (Ken Frazier), Amex (Ken Chenault), Xerox (Ursula Burns), google (Sundar Pichai), microsoft (Satya Nadella), Pepsico (Indra Nooyi), mastercard (Ajay Banga), citibank (vikram pandit) - didn't the trend change there too? Now don't be an asshole and say that all these companies started going down after being led by non-whites :)

That is how it's always been at Intel and will continue. Females, non-whites, outsiders need not apply for CEO position.

Why can't it be a black or brown?

I wish he fires all the whites from intel :) Intel desperately needs more diversity.. The whites have taken the company to such a misery and this needs to be corrected by non-whites.

Totally agreed. But again if he was a smart Ahole Qcom would not have tried to give him a different position. They do see his value and thought he was effective. So too did Intel's board and CEO. That speaks volumes that two rival companies see value in him. Ofcourse QC liked one more than other but that in no way makes him a Ahole.

Many people shared the view that he looked after himself very much. He never really cared for people under him except one or two. Even if someone flawlessly executes a project, he'd not appreciate individually. So many people think he never gives anyone else a due. So that's why there are opinions. But I see it slightly differently: he holds people in such high bar that he cannot accept anything less. He keeps himself to that rigor and also judges others with it. People may not call it as leadership but that's his style. I recollect hearing him say he is like "coach style" leadership guy; He always tries to push people higher; That everyone experienced working with him; He tries to squeeze the power and performance numbers to their best. Challenges it so much and if someone slips up a suggestion he holds it on and tries to get that.

If someone says he worked for 3 years and did not learn much, I cannot comment on it. But many of the people do know that he challenges people and makes them go bit further. Sometimes, organizations donot question themselves (remember groupthink?). He is adept in challenging that which made many people inconvenient.

Or the comment from somebody who worked with him: "I worked with MR for about 3 years and nothing good ever came from him, you learned jackshit from him. Never happy, never inspiring. Good riddance."

He would yell but it always had clear purpose. He is so smart he knew details very well. But when others were expected to know details and if they didnot know, he'd yell. But I should say, in one of the earliest projects it was very harsh. In recent years it was much less. One thing to note though: if he cannot yell at the higher ups, he would shout at guys below them. that was unfortunate; But later people realized he was using that technique. Most of his frustration came when people from same project disagree in front of him. That's start of tirade; Also, I have seen many people that he never yelled at because they were prepared for all the possibilities that he'd ask. So his yelling had a reason. Some call it foul mouthed but that's just sensitivity meter.

What about all the comments on the Qualcomm layoff forum about Murthy being a foul-mouthed tyrant and abusive slave driver? He may be a really smart guy but doesn't sound like much of a leader.

QC was clear: They only wanted one President. They wanted to retain Murthy but he thought he could contribute more elsewhere. That's why he left. everyone made a choice they liked. No one has a problem here. Murthy has to prove himself now and most of people including Intel's CEO and board think he will be successful. Only time will tell

Guys, Murthy is a go-getter. He will ensure that a project gets executed at all costs and he understands all the levers that he can pull to make it successful. Usually top managers leave the levers to juniors but he knows how to handle the levers himself and control the project. His execution skills are amazing. His technical skills are also very good and sharp. He can understand any technical topic and if he does not understand, he just calls the main POC after the meeting and understands everything. Then he calls for a deep dive to get wider perspective; next, he just stores it in memory and retrieves at will. You can count on it that you cannot get away by telling him some story. He is sharp and catches it. Top it with his memory. He can recite the power numbers and die sizes .. to the detail. His strategic vision is also very good. He has visualized multiple forward looking projects and helped bringing them up too. And most important, he never quits. He summarizes a word for me "Maniac'al pursuit of the goal". He does not give up easily, actually never gives up. If you ask him "What's one new goal you'd achieve that we currently donot have". See what his reply will be. So in your next all hands meeting ask him; And check out 2 years from now.

Murthy is Jaba the Hutt (literally), he is not a strategic leader.

IoT/IoE = internet of NOTHING! Marketing ploy at best - at worst --> little niche products that require a lot of HW expense, but give absolutely NOT VALUE to large companies. The only companies benefiting from IoE/IoT will be little mom-n-pop shops that can develop crap for "mass markets" (e.g. eBay, Amazon, etc). Murty trying to take Intel to IoE/IoT heaven is a pipedream. Quote me: "NEVER HAPPEN". Plus, he's an a-hole in meetings, but good luck with that.
