Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

I was laid off like many others last week, but relieved. The company culture over the last few years has become toxic.

I grew up at Bank of America - working there from my early 20s to early 40s. I drank the kool-aid, learned, promoted, and sacrificed my personal life for many years constantly delivering many millions in productivity savings. I watched the company change from one that values process excellence and efficiency to one that is so paranoid of regulatory and repetitional risk that re-work is the norm. From that perspective, layoffs make sense if the bank truly wants to re-focus. The fear of this created an excessively toxic work environment and the rise of poor leadership.

In my case, I received an Exceeds rating and large bonus for the first time in several years (Feb-2015). Two weeks later, my manager (the worst example of leadership I have ever encountered) let me know that my exceptional performance and high salary has made me a target for yearly staff reductions. I ignored the comment, believing that my performance would speak for itself as it always has. Throughout the next 7 months, I learned that a hostile work environment extends virtually. I was harassed constantly by my manager to the point in which both my health and personal life started to decline severely. I was vomiting nearly every morning and afraid to walk away from my laptop between the hours of 5AM and 5PM to use the restroom. She would send late night unprofessional threatening emails, secretly call Advice and Counsel with fake performance information that I had documentation to prove incorrect, tell my peers and I detailed lies about one another, blocked my job postings, the list goes on and on. She (my manger) even went so far as to suggest that I find a health reason to take a leave of absence to protect my employment status. It felt as if she was hunting for reasons to terminate for cause or encourage me to quit to save on year end severance package costs, not to mention protect her own job. With all of that being said, I was relieved when my position was eliminated last week. As a single mother I am scared out of my mind.

My thoughts go out to the hundreds of others in my position now searching for work. Hopefully we can take the skills we developed at BofA and add value in a positive environment.

My manger in Charlotte performed the same stunt in our department. Singling people out for personal gain and in some cases I overheard him talking to his manager out of state who he also wanted to eliminate for cost savings. Human resource helped the managers massage the elimination in underhanded tricks. Apparently they cannot ask you to leave. My manager laughed when he ran people into the ground of unhealthy (Great guy let’s call him short DICK). He tried this with a black person but human resources helped the gentleman move out of the department quickly without the managers approval. Interesting the manager was allowed to continue his games.

I watched this for a few years and then it was my turn. At the Christmas volunteer event I had over heard a manager’s discussion with an executive. The female manager said I have the green light from HR to get rid of them and I am so happy. The executive did not say anything just nodded his head.

I hope everyone will share these experiences abroad for their lifetime to help show this place is not what they advertise.

The ironic part of this story: You cannot write the truth on job applications on why you were let go from your last job because they cannot handle the truth.

Let us call it the “BIG JOKE “

This does not happen in our society because we have rules to protect us against this type of treatment.

I gave notice to retire Oct 22 2013 and on Oct 24 2013 the entire team was laid off. All the misfits moved to my Manager who was a easy going and caring and I was aware of their intend. So 15 years no severance package for me, they did covered a few hours so I did not have to return to work. All this stress in this business killed my thyroid...

I am so sorry to hear your story, especially the pain and disrespect which you endured from your manager. I worked for Bank of America for 10 years and was laid off in September. In my case, my manager gave me a 45 day advance notice and then immediately restructured, thus realigning me to a new manager that I knew nothing about. It was a rather interesting last few weeks, as she had no clue about my experience or work ethic.

I will say that the last 3 months has been an amazing time for me, personally. Thankfully, I am on severance, and have taken time to LIVE. When you spend so much of your day as well as some nights and weekends devoted to a job, you can grow to lose so much of yourself. Now that I have had this opportunity to rest, relax, and recharge, I will begin my next job with a whole new sense of focus. You and your family matter. Work is just a job.

Good luck on your job search and Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Wow!! I had the same exact manager. It's amazing that these type of managers continue to work at the bank let alone receive all kinds of recognition and run "Employee Satisfaction" groups. Makes me sick!
