Where did it go wrong? 3 letters - SLB. We all knew that once they took over the company it would eventually deteriorate.

I saw this post and just wanted to add that I resigned my position with MI Swaco several years ago meaning that I was not laid off. As such, my opinion is rather independent of who writes what. I resigned because I knew more than my superiors but I would have never been promoted without a sponsor. Now, I am an industry expert appreciated by any private, non profit or public company and institution that I am dealing with despite all the claims of my former superiors at this company that I had not deserved a promotion or raise.

Schlumberger is a pure meritocracy and you only get to the top if you are good and I mean exceptionally good. Thats why we are #1 in the world and our managers are some of the most sought after professionals in the business.

This is what happens when connections is the only thing that matters to get the top management positions. It works to a point when something somewhere goes wrong and then it's already late to realise that you must completely replace all the upper management including department directors. This is what they face and not necessarily Schlumberger. They lay people off in thousands and hundreds of these thousands pay for exactly this mistake - incompetent management with fake diplomas if any and credentials. This is the most disgusting cover up that this industry has even seen.

Same as with Smith Bits. Management is more worried about numbers than producing the best product in the world. It's sad. With Smith International, they've taken a world class, world record holding NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD company and ran it into the ground.
