Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

M-I Swaco, Aberdeen. Alternative job offer?

So, HR rang me and gave me the old "we will look for another role within SLB first before laying you off." Sorta thing. Just wondering, out of 100 what chance have i got of this even happening and finding a job in slb? Just kinda seems like a superficial, standard thing to say. I have an advanced engineering degree, but it seems SLB just takes on any degree almost so I don't think it will matter

Oil and gas companies need to hire a set number of new grads each year; otherwise the universities will stop offering Petroleum Engineering degrees. This hurt the industry the last downturn (The Great Crew Change), so the industry wants those programs to still be in place when things pick back up again.

HR are going through the motions as to do otherwise opens them up to legal challenge through not following a proper "consultation" process as defined under EU law.

In reality, once they have identified you as a target you have no hope of a new position in the current environment - they will have been ordered by Houston to lay off a set number of heads come what may, and the way things look there will be more layoffs early next year.

You can delay the process of redundancy by applying for any positions you can see in the world where you have suitable qualifications and the position does not restrict applications from overseas, even if you have no intention of moving or accepting the offer if you were to actually get it.

This way you get a few more weeks salary as they cannot lay you off until all options to redundancy have been exhausted.

Do not expect HR to chase up the jobs for you as they don't want to keep you, so do your own searching.

Just be glad you are not in Houston or the USA in general - when your number is up here, you are marched out of the door immediately so don't get the extra few weeks salary that you get thanks to EU consultation rules.

Yeah on gradcracker and the SLB website they are still advertising for grads. But are in the process of laying off grads from last year. Can anyone make sense of that?
