Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Targeted layoffs

In my BU 90% of the layoffs were minorities. My group in particular ALL layoffs were minorities.. One white guy was let go but he was new.. Crazy! Anyone else seeing this trend?

Yes they were all minorities. They were educated, male and females, mostly white, in high tax brackets.

Ha. In legal only women were laid off this time. Not a man in the group. Seriously if legal can do it, I guess any group can

Last "poor" performance review started with, "You have exceeded the stated goals and objectives but you have not exceeded SPIRIT values." And then he went on to state the poor performance review is due in part to the expectations of a exceptional performance review. And then I went on to note the letters of accommodation from two upper managers associated with an on time and on budget critical projects. The company has no idea how to manage management, let alone manage performance reviews.

Probably were low performers that got hired due to being diverse... more dead weight gone!

I was laid off due to the harassment claims again the supervisor. HR and Ethics told me to sue the company if I so desired but otherwise the job of HR and Ethics is to protect the company and the management in the company. Retaliation is alive and well and ethics is not alive and well.

One of my coworkers (female) was laid off while her supervisor with multiple sexual harassment complaints against him was protected. Ethics my ass. There is retaliation in this company.

The groups that I saw affected by the layoffs were the young college grad, senior staff and those who worked on an asset that was about to be sold. In all cases, the econmics were against the groups mentioned. Race had nothing to do with the layoffs. Work place diversity has been the hot HR trend for the past decade now... no one is out to take away your job. But by all means, go right ahead and keep playing the victim if helps you cope.

I saw the layoffs affect minorities and women disproportionately. Racism nowadays is not like the old days. It is about "networking", and the networks are about white males helping each other. The Economist magazine a week ago showed how this type of networking worked against Asian Americans, who had high academic scores and were involved in extracurricular activities. In the higher ranks, the white males go hunting together. That is a sign that you are in the inner circle, and layoff-proof.

If you haven't observed, good for you. For those that have observed, are they liars? Probably not. The truth is that people prefer to believe it is not a problem. But without transparency, problems do arise. Why not release the demographics, including age?

ConocoPhillips does not include the word "diversity" in the recruiting offerings as stating as such would admit diversity, or lack of, is a problem; or so that is the opinion of upper management. Yes there is a problem with diversity, or lack of.

THE FIRST STEP TO FIXING A PROBLEM IS RECOGNIZING THERE IS ONE

Jesus .... don't turn this into a racial thing. We all gladly accepted salaries above most other industries. Part of that is due to the high risk, high reward nature of this industry. Stop fishing for problems that don't exist. I've been in this industry long enough to see a couple of these cycles. They'll happen again, no matter what your color.

This has always been the silent elephant in the room. Same problem in l48. Silence doesn't help. Any solutions?

Yes the layoffs did in fact involve quite a few minorities. Either the company does not care or the company does not know. Either way a bad thing. In the last company the new management started the layoff process with two individuals and both were black. The end result the layoffs ceased for an extended period of time while the company as a whole reevaluated the process. The perception was terrible, obviously; the intentions unknown.

I know in my group we tried to get rid of all the minorities, but HR said we had to keep at least one. She is a white woman.

The company does not employ enough minorities to layoff 10% of the workforce and layoff only minorities. The white man does dominate the company but the above statement is not true.
