For anyone in the know, or who has been through it, will someone just show up at your desk and ask you to go with them to a conference room, or will you get a meeting invite well ahead of time so you have to sweat?

In calgary, they call you to the boardroom, explain what is happening, explain the papers they are giving you and you can go back to your desk to pack up if you choose. You can say bye to people but no mass emails are to be sent (they tell you that). They give you a taxi chit if you need one but don't escort you out unless you cause a scene or are extremely mad.
My manager came by after lunch and told me there was going to be an "emergency team meeting" at four o'clock and for me to be sure to be available. When I walked out of my office at four he was standing there to walk me to the conference room where the HR rep was waiting. The rep took my card key, would not let me go back to my office and basically just pointed to the door and said, "you can leave that way".
Bring an escape Bag ! Put your goodies in the bag! I will have bare minimum with me..
Manager stopped by and asked to talk, I knew then. Never allowed backwards. Only forward to the exit door and they mail everything to you. Take your purse, phone, ID, whatever is important and kiss the rest goodbye until 2 weeks later.

Not to worry as the manager is tasked with presenting you to HR in the conference room. The process by which you are presented to HR is at the discretion of the manager. Security is in place for the layoffs via the unassuming individual in the break area between the conference room and the elevator. At the point you are handed the notice you are no longer welcome at the company or on company property. The company will not hesitate to call the police and have you escorted out. Not everyone is calm and collected at a layoff notice and the company is concerned with violence. Management are provided a script. All parties involved are provided a script. The HR individual was very nervous at the layoff a few month ago. On the other hand, I was not nervous at eh layoff a few months ago and I think that made the HR individual more nervous. A few idiot supervisors are enjoying the power trip but most are not.
Do they call you on your desk phone, cell phone, or Skype? My Skype audio doesn't work and I never answer the desk phone if I don't recognize the phone number calling me.
Has anyone, just for fun, not taken the predetermined route out of the building? Just told the HR rep and the manager that you were going back to your office to get your things? They don't really have any power over you at that point, and it's not like the HR rep is going to restrain you. By the time security is called you could easily have time to say good by to a friend or two, and picked out a few things from your desk. Maybe I have a dark sense of humor, but I think it would be hilarious to see the looks on their faces when you said, "no, we are going to do it like this".
Might depend on location, but in Bartlesville people received call from Manager to meet him/her in a conference room where they were told of layoff and introduced to the HR person who went through the process of what would happen when and what was required of laid off employee.
Asked and answered time and time again. No WIKI at the top but do read through the postings for helpful information. Odd call from a member of management requesting you to proceed immediately to a conference room. The member of management hands you the signed layoff notice. The member of HR in the room hands you the severance paperwork and asks you if you need anything from your desk required for you to depart the building immediately and proceed to home such as your keys, phone or wallet. HR runs through a check list and request the company ID. HR escorts you out of the building immediately via a predetermined route.
I just got a phone call asking me to come to a boardroom. There wasn't much advanced notice beyond that.
