Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

I see a dead future ahead...for those who get layoffs...it will not be easy to get back into energy sector at-least for next 2 years...

Don't be too optimistic. Chesapeake announced a 25% reduction today. Williams announced merger / acquisition and a move to Dallas yesterday. Samson announced a bankruptcy...

If this parallels 1986, and it looks like it, with major credit being cut off to major ( like COP ) and minor companies, it'll be a five or six year drought, and then only slowly coming back for two or three years. Not many old faces will be seen after the recovery.

I've gone through 3 cycles now, I plan to leave oil and gas, take voluntary redundancy and go back to Construction to finish my career. The company was good to me, but the split really killed the soul of the company, many were proud of.

Not true. I was laid off earlier this year, 4 weeks had an offer better benefits, more money and a promotion from where I was with ConocoPhillips. If you have the experience, the competition wants you.

Best thing to do is look for a job in a different industry, even if it's just for a couple of years. Yes, the pay will be lower but it's more than no income and more than a limited amount of unemployment.

Canada has very limited downstream industry...mainly upstream in canada

A local recruiter noted a very slow job market in sectors heavy in energy including Houston, OKC and Tulsa. Intuitive yes, but good to have confirmation via an individual in the industry. Individuals are often not open to disclose employment status and so a perspective on the job market is difficult. On a positive note, downstream is hiring so head to the P66 careers site. Certainly explore options beyond the Texas and Oklahoma job markets.
