It's not lay them off today or never, if you aren't there they will let you know on your return. If you are on list, you won't be missed in the process..

One way to avoid getting laid off is to relocate your office to a remote location - basements have historically worked well. The company won't be able to find you and will eventually complete the paperwork to lay you off w/o formally notifying you. This enables you to continue performing your job, but won't receive a paycheck or benefits. You WILL get to keep things like your staplers (don't let anybody steal that. Ever.)

The process is over the course of weeks so not an issue if you are gone on a given date. The manager is tasked with determining dates that are not appropriate. A day of vacation on the noted day is a "get out of layoff free" card.
