Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

2015 Layoffs at Teradata

Does anyone have info on potential reorg and layoffs that might be happening later in Q3 2015 at Teradata? I heard conflicting stories, some of my friends still work there, I left in 2011 but still keep track of what's happening with this once great company. You'll see many rumors on the web, so please make sure you are very careful about what you perceive as right or wrong

#facepalm on the watch analogies! People invest in a Rolex also for prestige and luxury more than "needs". For function, both Rolex and Casio watches tell the same exact time. In datawarehousing, luxury is irrelevant. It's about performance, reliability, and support.

But let's humor this analogy a little bit... TDC is no Rolex either. Rolex continues to innovate in its small niche space, has a very clear market positioning (vs. the Casios for example), and they don't go crazy buying other small watch companies either. Meh.

Rolex is Teradata's domain, not Casio. Everyone can afford Casio, but not everyone can afford Rolex. When you learn your Casio is not sufficient, and you reach for another brand that may be cost effective, but realize it is still not capable of delievering your greatest needs, and is ultimately costing you more money than if you would have spent the real money to begin with, you'll wish you would have invested in a Rolex.

When the dust settles and Hadoop settles into is appropriate role of analyzing unstructured text and logs, Teradata will still be there, creating the report the CEO checks every morning, the one they use to generate their SEC filings, and the one that makes use of whatever the latest big data gleamings may be by interfacing it with their actual customers.

How long will it take for the dust to settle? People are getting laid off next week.

not everyone reading this bleeds orange. I work at a place with petabytes of storage and the days of unlimited budget on TD are over. We have TD but we also have new technologies such as Hadoop. The move is toward Hadoop and using data techniques such as caching to handle short-term storage. trouble is, SQL Server costs a helluva lot less than TD and caches just fine on inexpensive, virtual servers.

TD is like a lot of other companies that fails to see what is happening around them and pretends like no one is listening to their 'smarter than you' message. trouble is, TD is not giving out equipment for free. it is over-priced for what it does. I need a watch. rolex is nice but casio will suffice.

keep up the myopia that people will eventually understand how smart TD is...'you just dont get it!!'. the jeb bush of technology companies.

Lots of layoffs in the field (sales and Solution Architects) on Monday. If you have a 15 minute confidential con call scheduled for Monday you will be laid off.

You guys are so full of crap. Do you even know what Big Data is? Its unstructured data that can't fit in an RDBMS! Petabytes and Petabytes of it typically. There are so few real big data use cases it's laughable, and in the ones that are legitimate, the data only actually becomes useful once the analysis is fed back into a DWH via a connector. This is just like HTML5 was a few years ago, when everyone was afraid to invest in any application development because "HTML5 was going to make all of it obsolete". Well guess what, HTML5 didn't make everything obsolete, but it did scare a lot of CIOs into holding off on app development for a couple of years.

Even in the wildest dream scenario, where big data becomes a method of reporting on data in place, never transformed, you are talking about such a HUGE amount of in memory work that has to be done every time you look at it! That's going to be slow people. Then they are going to say ... aaaah this is slow, we need something faster, and they are going to end up with a DWH for the real analysis they needed to do in the first place.

Just because all of you read something in Forbes that scared you, doesn't mean you understand at all what you're talking about. Whoever wrote that below about big data being a small part of the ecosystem was the first one in a long time to call a spade a spade, and I suggest the rest of you armchair experts do some actual research!

Start by reading this series:

http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/guides/Big-data-tutorial-Everything-you-need-to-know

I for one, am going to continue dollar cost averaging into Teradata, because they still have the fastest data warehouse in the industry, and though it seems as if hardware sales may be changing, the DWH isn't going anywhere. In fact it's going to grow, quite obviously, as the quantity of operational data expands each year. I love big data, and I love working with it whenever possible, but it just isn't a replacement for a proper data warehouse by any stretch of the imagination.

Its much cheaper for a company to layoff older/higher paid workers and hire college grads and train them with the new technologies. Tech changes so fast that everyone needs constant retraining, so a college grad can be trained on Hadoop just as easily as a high paid old timer. This appears to be the corp strategy.

This is just empire building.

Remove existing service delivery management structure, concentrate power into the new ThinkBig organization and change the reporting lines, that is all that's happening.

Existing client relationships and field consultants be damned.

More layoffs are coming to Teradata on Tuesday Jan 12th. Move over to Think Big if you want to be safe for 2016. However I agree with #ThinkBig sucks and #Think Big sucks and the post below:

Did you guys see the new org structure for Americas region that was published yesterday? I cannot believe its the same Industry VPs as region heads with the same guys reporting to them. The PS managing partners bring shame to Teradata. These guys steered us into this mess to begin with, why are they still around? Getting rid of Rocky was a good move but they need to get rid of these guys as well.

Harry Lee is a total incompetent idiot that needs to be fired right away. Why is he promoting Think Big? Only way our services/consulting will survive is if we train our consulting staff with Hadoop.

#ThinkBig cannot replace Teradata resources. Their billing model is ridiculous and no client is going to pay premium dollar for Think Big resources. Clients are better off going to a Hadoop provider or a large services firm directly. Think Big is a shitty brand and as someone mentioned below is a MickeyMouse Shop. I thought Bain & Company was going to streamline us and have us work as one company and one brand. #ThinkBig sucks. #Think Big sucks.

Surprising you say that. There is an internal Email out from Harry Lee that says we should apply for consulting roles in Think Big. Management has no vision. How would Think Big save the day when Teradata is a better brand than Think Big. Clients are not stupid and they know Think Big is a mickey mouse shop that we picked up along the way.

@B8mLN8E-4ckow :

I am not sure where that spiel came from. From the looks of it, it looks to be more of the same. Lots of noise and very less real thinking.

breaking down the barriers between the traditional data warehouse and big data

What does this mean in real terms? Does it mean rationalizing the current portfolio as someone suggested? Does it mean removing the super annuated DWH products and consultants? Does it mean making Aster the same as any other Hadoop product? There doesn't seem to be any clarity.

Why should a customer come to Teradata if he can get the same and in many cases better service from the existing hadoop vendors? What is the TD USP?

Think Big Consulting approach

What consulting approach? There is no "approach" here. It is no-better than your run of the mill body shopping organization. Not one of the Think Big consultant (here in the U.S, at least) is either a contributor, committer or Apache PMC member. Not one of the TB consultants are thought leaders or have given non-sponsored talks at any one of the leading industry forums. Not one of the TB projects has resulted in a strategic change of direction at a customer site.

They have been at-most successful in delivering small, scoped point-solutions. That is not where the competition is.

Teradata is going to drastically cut back on the number of overseas resources utilized in customer facing roles in our core accounts

This should have been done years ago. The truth is , its not easy. On the DWH front TD is a recognized name, in the new Big Data Analytics World , not so much. Its very hard for TD to attract quality Big Data consultants. I can count on my fingers the number of good consultants in this area.

We are getting back to our core competencies, and though there will be some pains in the short term, our plans are good, and our vision is secure

All this talk of short-term pains only indicate further RIF's as the company sheds more weight to make itself attractive to potential sellers.

rationalizing our big data and UDA portfolio

Collapse Aster libraries into Hadoop and Teradata. Makes sense. 3 platforms was never sustainable.

I expect our Think Big consulting approach to lead to increased big data market penetration

Add more analytics people. Think big is still skewed towards too many platform engineers. Data engineering needs data science.

offerings targeted towards mid-sized businesses.

Cloud for mid-market, appliance for mega majors. Good idea. Make sure cloud has global support. Large companies in international are actually mid-market for US.

cut back on the number of overseas resources utilized in customer facing roles in our core accounts

Localize pre-sales. Looks like it's gonna be tough to be a "regional resource" moving forward. On the whole a good move since many of the regionals are just spending money. On the other hand, beef up expertise on the local front and try not to lose the (few) good people.

we have been the best Data Warehouse in the world, and we still are. Big data, though significant and an important part of our future, is actually a tiny fraction of real world analytic ecosphere.

Fact or myopia? Yes don't throw the ship (DWH) but also don't forget the lifeboats (Aster, Hadoop).

Good luck to TDC.

Can anyone make a sense of this? "Third, Teradata is going to drastically cut back on the number of overseas resources utilized in customer facing roles in our core accounts. Teradata has the highest quality analytics offering in the world, and servicing our clients with the high caliber, local resources they expect is a top priority. New pricing models in conjunction with the already underway regional restructuring will serve to protect our position as the market leader. Our most valuable resource has always been our people, and we are going to continue investing in you, and are implementing our transformation as rapidly as possible". A lot of words and contradictions within one para.

(Most of you around the world probably did not see this, so I am posting it here)

Good people of Teradata,

Teradata is working towards a vision that is centered on being our customers’ partner of choice to solve the largest and most complex data challenges in the world. We have the potential to fulfill this vision, given our decades of leadership in data warehousing, our strategic acquisitions, and the leadership status we have today in the broader analytic ecosystem.

First, we are focusing our R&D budget on rationalizing our big data and UDA portfolio, and streamlining our offering with a focus on breaking down the barriers between the traditional data warehouse and big data. I am confident that what you see in the coming year will be a significant improvement in the the cohesion of our offering, and I expect our Think Big consulting approach to lead to increased big data market penetration.

Second, Teradata's public cloud/software-only offerings through Amazon Web Services will open up an entire new channel of revenue as we release offerings targeted towards mid-sized businesses. This broad and untapped market will be addressed by the previously discussed Named Accounts and Market accounts strategy. These companies are all great candidates for our on-premises, cloud, and hybrid solutions, which will grow our core data warehouse business and increase our operating income.

Third, Teradata is going to drastically cut back on the number of overseas resources utilized in customer facing roles in our core accounts. Teradata has the highest quality analytics offering in the world, and servicing our clients with the high caliber, local resources they expect is a top priority. New pricing models in conjunction with the already underway regional restructuring will serve to protect our position as the market leader. Our most valuable resource has always been our people, and we are going to continue investing in you, and are implementing our transformation as rapidly as possible.

In closing I truly believe that we have what it takes not only to survive, but to thrive in this environment. We are getting back to our core competencies, and though there will be some pains in the short term, our plans are good, and our vision is secure. For decades we have been the best Data Warehouse in the world, and we still are. Big data, though significant and an important part of our future, is actually a tiny fraction of real world analytic ecosphere. Though this segment will grow over time, many in the marketplace have an unrealistic perception of the role and applicability of big data, and it is important that we guide our clients through this time of uncertainty.

Looks like the grade level severance package was dictated by the senior management who were hired recently and fear getting cut. Spending 25 yrs of career to make Teradata a leader in the space has to pay price for it and getting hired recently at a senior level and contribute towards the company downfall gets rewarded. Cool!!

Teradata/NCR did the same calculations 15-20 years ago. So it's not like the cost savings were unknown. The question is, was the change made based on the expected layoffs in the upcoming years(s).
