Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

When I came to target I was amazed at the youth in this company. Then I realized that there was a decent population of folks who did nothing but market themselves through "coffee" / "developmental" statuses. You could become a director if you were an effective communicator, marketed and carried yourself with confidence. I even heard a leader say that results didn't matter - what matter was how you got there. The company paid too much emphasis on personal development over results and this is the state of affairs. Not every employee at target is like this but there's a decent load. Over the years this has increased leading to some leaders who don't have any substance making key decisions on important projects. The hardworking folks at target keep slogging hoping their work will speak for them but some leaders take credit and rise while the hardworking folks remain where they are. I don't blame Cornell for the restructuring, it had had to happen sooner or later. But I do not appreciate the way it is being conducted - it's an embarrassment. I blame the previous leadership for what we are facing today. Politics, lies, back stabbing, taking credit for others work, treating employees poorly is common in some teams and the exactly opposite is also true in some teams. Let's just hope that the fat gets washed out next week while the hardworking folks remain - those who really care and can get results. But TM morale is extremely poor at the moment! Like others have been saying: there's life out there - go and enjoy it!

As a fellow HQ employee, I can't agree with this post enough. You absolutely nailed it on the head. Yes, Target became "fat" with leaders who played the game, but the way management is handling this is embarassing. Cornell doesn't care about keeping top talent or employee morale/workload. All he cares about is the bottom line for investors.

^---------------- I heard the exact same thing said to me once. I took it to mean "dont tick off your peers to meet some goal" which is otherwise sound advice, but in this particular case, eggs needed to be broken to make that omelet. This is where Target fails as a company. Sure, it's getting more ruthless at letting swaths of people go, but while they are in their employ their trained to take conflict avoidance to a pathological level and therefore become incapable of making hard choices or doing meaningful work.
