Ford Layoffs: I Got a Robocall from Ford saying ‘You’re Fired’

It seems like nowadays there is no appreciation for sincerity and honesty. No matter how hard I try just to ‘Get There’ the road always feels so long, tiring and difficult. So, here I am telling you a story on how my life changed when the renowned automobile manufacturer, Ford Motor Company, fired me along with 90 other honest workers from their Chicago Assembly Plant.

I still remember the day like yesterday; it was October 31st, 2014 (Halloween). The day started with my wife waking me up and telling me to eat something before we began preparation for Halloween. However, from the moment I woke up, something didn't feel right. Regardless, I ate my breakfast and decided to check my voice messages.

I received only one message and it was from my workplace, which I would say was an unwelcome Halloween surprise. The call was an automated message announcing “As part of our normal business process we've temporarily adjusted our workforce numbers at the Chicago Assembly Plant” which meant, maybe I’m fired!

At first, I didn't believe it and thought it was a Halloween Prank or something. So, in order to confirm I called a colleague of mine, but he didn't respond and neither did most of my friends. However, I just assumed that the news was a prank and moved on with celebrating Halloween with my family. The next day I showed up to work anyway, only to realize my ID badge didn't function.

A few minutes later, the security told me that I was out of a job along with 90 other workers and said that the decision was only temporary. They didn't let us in and neither did Ford accept our request for a comment. I was hurt because I was always honest and sincere to the company. But what did they give me in return? A Robocall to tell me that I was fired and they no longer needed me.

I was out of a job and even though the company said it was a temporary decision, I never got a call back. But, I guess this is just how things are nowadays…

I thought this too, especially after Ford announced Marcy's retirement.

I wonder if Marcy still following or posting on this site.

Lol @ANqOtOo-nDyck

I had same thought.

Salaried IT gender and diversity issues fixed? Right. LMAO. The discriminatory good ole boys club is alive and well and protected by HR. It has just gone underground and token marginally qualified gender and diversity candidates are allowed to bubble up and then are lauded by many as proof the culture has changed. I can’t think of a single stellar diversity candidate that was allowed to bubble up. I have watched an IT supervisor harass and bully his employees and others in the IT organization for twenty years. I have watched the LL5s and LL4 protect this supervisor as employee after employee goes to HR, transfers or quits. Everyone within a radius of this supervisor knows what is going on. Some supervisors escort him out of their teams area when he stops by.

Every company has its pros and cons, but a company that does not consistently stand by their corporate truths is destined to fail.

Funny that one of Hackett's "Our Truths" is "Put People First".

Does that mean first thing to sacrifice?

While we spend so much money building new facilities all over the globe?

Why did we cut to the bone during the recession only to turn around and hire "too many" back and have to cut again? during what is supposed to be a good economy?

The say the automotive industry has a cyclical economy, could that be self created?

I've experienced training people in India to take over my co-workers jobs (and had a lot of trouble looking in the mirror). We were told they were cheaper and better educated. When we asked what happens when their salaries become equivalent, we were told they would pull out of India and go to China or Africa (luckily that hasn't happened). I heard of a worker who went temporarily blind (apparently due to stress) and that was not during one of the cycles of cutting. I was told (a long time ago) that if I wasn't working 60-70 hours a week (without any additional pay) I wasn't carrying my fair share.

At least this time around, there was recognition that we had become a "top heavy" company, and so it started from the top, working down the org charts, with cuts at all levels. At least there was supposed to be thought put into what work we would stop doing rather than just "do more with less".

BUT - with all of that, I have been (and may likely remain) a proud Ford Motor Company employee. Why? Mostly because of the people I work with.

I was a young female in the auto industry back in the late 80's, early 90's and there were issues. I watched that get fixed (at least in salaried IT and Engineering - can't speak for everywhere). I work in an incredibly diverse, fair, respectful, and "safe" work place.

There's Marcy Klevorn, CIO and now head of Mobility. There's Ken Washington, Head of Research and Advanced Engineering. Both are amazing, qualified people who have proven that gender and race do not prevent people from getting ahead at Ford.

I have seen Ford adopt Transitional Work Arrangements, were you can work a reduced schedule (with reduced pay and benefits) in order to take care of kids, or family issues. I've also watched the company embrace Flex Time, Job Sharing, and "relaxed business casual" attire ( I had to wear skirt suits when I started, even though I had to crawl around under desks connecting computer cables). But I have also watched our retirement and health care benefits slowly erode.

I'm proud of our Most Ethical Company Awards.

When Volkswagen had that emission scandal, I blurted to some friends "that would never happen at Ford". They asked how I could say that. I paused, it had been an immediate and gut level reaction. But then I replied, because I know Ford engineers, they wouldn't do that, there are too many that wouldn't let that happen. Yes, there can be errors, things uncovered late, but there would not be anything purposeful, like that was. Most take safety and quality very seriously. They are incredibly proud of their work. Course, I've also watched us do less real engineering, and more "assembly".

Maybe that pride and commitment was the old school crowd, maybe that will change, but I sure hope not.

I'm worried, I have 4 people that depend on my salary and benefits (without much backup). I'm sure many are in the same boat.

Wow! Apparently I had a lot to unload and share, … sigh

Horrendous treatment of employees who are any companies most valuable asset!

Amazing that a Company such as Ford can behave with such arrogance....it’s the same as how they treat their suppliers just as an expendable commodity.

They are surely doomed.
