Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

How I was layed off

It started in the morning right after a meeting. The boss came over to the guy next to me and asked him to come to his office. You could tell the guy was nervous. His hands were shaking as they took him in. Like cattle on the way to be slaughtered. He was gone for about 15 mins and he was escorted back to his desk. You could tell he had been crying and he was making weird noises and his whole body was shaking and sweating. He kept saying that his wife was in the hospital and his kids were sick. He kept begging for his job. The lady escorting him around just started putting random things in a box. She took him by the arm and walked him out. I was next. I went in and my boss said there was a downturn and I was layed off. He said I had 15 mins to get my things. I handed over my PKI badge. I was putting my things into the box with the HR lady right there. My boss came over and said that he would escort me out and she could get the next guy. My boss told me he never liked me and was glad to see me go. He also said that he liked the power watching people squirm in front of him. Knowing they had no power over him! That was really eye opening and I'm glad I'm done.

I've been through this process too many times, and it don't get easier, you don't shake from fear, its shock, anger, rage, disbelief, you feel that you are not as good as those who are left , but most of all you feel you have no control , and right then you don't. Because you did not prepare for it, but if you have a job today , then it could be any of us tomorrow, so prepare. You feel such a fool, not being ready for this crap news, the other side have practised they know what they want to say and how they will say it..

,

So if you are concerned you may be next

Firstly to remember, you did nothing wrong

  • clear your real personal stuff now before they do, ignore if people ask why, say it makes sense .

  • write down what you think you are due and make sure you ask about it

  • write down questions ,take your list with you (ask your partner )

  • breathe deep, don't let them push you out before you have said your bit

  • if you don't understand get them to explain again

  • if they don't say ask why you were selected ...ask the question example..... why was I selected

  • if you think you were treated with prejudice,,, ask the question......... did age or other reasons affect the selection

  • above all write down what you would like to say if it happens.

Does it help, hell yes..it does . because you stop being the victim and take back your future , it also helps when you get asked by someone else , did you ask them??? you are still out of a job but you feel better about yourself, and that is really important.

I am still with SLB, but disgusted with the way you have been released. If I had to let someone in my team go, I would'nt be able to do it without feeling deep pain for the affected employee and his family.

That is just crazy. My husband put in 10 years with Marathon and his boss didn't even have the balls to do the firing. They had some other manager come in and give the speech to him. He couldn't even take his personal belongings with him that morning. They put his company badge, credit card, and phone in a bag and then walked him out the door like he was a criminal. They packed up his office and shipped his stuff to him. It makes me sick to my stomach the way the oil and gas companies are treating people. Like a previous poster said, karma will come back and get them.

hope the tide turns and somehow you end up being his boss . The people one ticks off on the way up are the ones you meet on your way down. Such karma does not go unpunished.

Well, at least SLB let you have 15 minutes to pack ur belonging. BHI just walked the victims out, from the slaughter rooms.

I had a similar experience at a Houston EMS office. Unfortunately this isn't surprising...
